Haris Sharif Pte Ltd – Fragrant Biryani in Teban Gardens

I will always be in awe of how spices can bring so much complexity to a dish. Individually, each spice is so distinctly unique, and yet when together in a spice blend, they meld harmoniously into something special. The biryani from Haris Sharif Pte Ltd in Teban Gardens reminded me of how amazing spices can be.

Haris Sharif Pte Ltd sits in Tong Kian Eating House. The stall offers Mutton, Chicken and Fish Biryani ($5.50 each). I went with the first 2 as they are more popular.

I started with the brightly-coloured rice, without any gravy. Star anise, cumin, cloves — the characteristic flavours of the spices popped in my mouth. The buttery and tasty rice was so addictive and I thought to myself, “Gee, why must carbs taste so good?”

The chicken curry had an interesting lemony hint to it which made it exceptionally palatable. The creamy curry blanketed the long grains of rice, and the flawless combination had me reaching for more.

Having a piece of bone-in mutton really got me excited. As I had expected, it was fall-off-the-bone tender. The other piece of mutton which I had was significantly chewier. I loved it as much as the tender piece surprisingly, as I got more flavour out of that morsel. I also enjoyed the heat level of the mutton curry, which was higher than that of the chicken curry.

I found out from a table of diners that this stall usually sees really long queues. On paper, the stall closes at 5 pm, but the biryani almost always finishes before then. On Fridays, they run out as early as 1 pm, even though they only start selling biryani from 11 am!
