Skip the usual fast-food joints and overly-expensive burger places to show some love for our hawkers who have perfected the art of flipping patties on a grill. From serving classics to interesting, but still successful modern, renditions, these stalls have nailed not just the patties but everything down to their buns. Most of the burgers on our list are definitely affordable for the quality that you’ll be getting so if that’s not extra motivation to head down to one of the eight hawker and coffee shop burger stalls here, we don’t know what is!

Abang Western Power

Tucked away in an airy coffee shop in Ang Mo Kio Ave 1, Muslim-owned Abang Western Power is known for serving classic Western fare with an Asian twist, which includes deliciously sloppy burgers. A signature that is 100% worth ordering, the Abang Ol Skool Double Patty Beef Burger ($9.30) is a hearty medley of texture and flavours. The sweetness and crunch of the caramelised onions and tanginess of the sauce complemented the juicy patties well. The icing on the cake was the brioche buns that were super duper toasted on the top but amazingly fluffy and well-buttered, making the burger oh-so sinful indeed. Folks who don’t fancy beef can also happily indulge in the SG Spiced Chicken Mushroom Cheese Burger ($9.30). There’s even a Slider Set ($8.50) featuring mini versions of the Ol Skool Beef and SG Spiced Chicken Burger!

Ashes Burnnit

hawkerburgers-10

Opened by a former co-founder of equally popular burger chain Burgs, Ashes Burnnit often sees long lines during peak hours at their outlets in Golden Mile Food Centre, Alexandra Village Food Centre and Springleaf Eating House. You can never go wrong with the good ol’ classic Ashes Smash Burger ($6.50 for single, $9 for double) that comes with perfectly crispy, golden fries. The smashed patty was well-cooked, amazingly juicy in the centre, and brimming with beefy flavours. Be sure to give their other burgers a go as well, such as the Pulled Brisket Burger ($7.50 for single, $10 for double), Truffle Mushroom Burger ($8 for single, $10.50 for double) and Fried Chicken Burger ($6.90 for single, $8.90 for double)!

Burgs by Project Warung

hawkerburgers-07

Having started out as a lone, humble hawker stall, Burgs by Project Warung has since expanded and has five outlets on the island. A staple at every outlet, the Burg’s Classic Cheese Burger ($6 for single, $9 for double) holds a deliciously juicy and flavorful beef patty, spruced up with the tanginess and slight heat from their signature sauce and pickled green chillies. I also loved how there was a slight crunch and saltiness from the fried shallots. The buns were very pillowy and buttered, making this one truly yummy burger. And to make it an even better meal, the accompanying fries were crispy and golden. No doubt I’ll be back to give their other burgers a shot, such as the Pulled Beef Brisket Burger ($7 for single, $10 for double), Crispy Rendang Burger ($6.40 for single, $8.90 for double) and Nacho Fish & Chips Burger ($7 for single, $9.50 for double).

Hammee’s

hammee's-2

If you’ve been a fan of Hammee’s Burgers since their early days in 2018, you’ll be pleased to know that all three of their burgers have made a return on their menu. The Crispy Fried Chicken Burger ($7) had always been a popular choice among patrons and I could definitely see why. The thick crispy chicken thigh is paired with a homemade slaw and Hammee’s special burger sauce. Sinking my teeth into the meaty, well-marinated chicken was absolute bliss, and I adored the refreshing crunchy slaw. You can opt for original, spicy or extra spicy versions. The spicy options are tinged with roasted garlic and peppers for that extra punch to further enhance the flavours of the chicken. The other two burgers on the menu are the Classic Beef Cheeseburger ($7.50 for single, $11 for double) and Hand Battered Fish Burger ($7 for single, $9.50 for double).

Salai M’an

hawkerburgers-12

Tucked away in Berseh Food Centre, Salai M’an specialises in smoked meats. The Muslim-friendly stall offers ten whopping choices such as the beef-centric Black Beauty ($8.90), Classic Cheezy ($7.90), Salai B. Bacon ($7.90) and Fish Alive ($7). For something with a bit of a local touch, go for the Rendang Kampong ($8) which promises a kaleidoscope of flavours. The smokiness of the juicy grilled Australian wagyu patty reaches you first before the richness of the rendang sauce does. Add mayo and cheese to that equation and you have a combination of sauces that make this burger creamy and addictive. To top it all off, the fluffy buns were well-buttered and brought a wave of buttery goodness to this complex mix of deliciousness.

Shaker Lakers

hawkerburgers-13
hawkerburgers-15

The north is full of hidden gems that are often overlooked and Shaker Lakers definitely deserves more credit for their hulking burgers. Their handmade burgers are all made upon order, and there’s 11 varieties to choose from! The Lakers French Beef Burger ($13.90) was an absolute sight to behold. It features a thick, juicy beef patty spruced up with flavour boosters like crispy bacon and sweet onion jam. I also loved the gentleness of the gooey brie cheese and how it perfectly complemented the burger alongside the refreshingly juicy tomato slices and fresh lettuce, all beautifully assembled between slightly toasted but still pillowy buns. The side of fries was also very aromatic, having been tossed in olive oil. There are even exclusive choices that are only available from Thursday to Saturday such as Lakers Wagyu Beef Burger ($16.90), Lakers Surf n Turf ($16.90) and Crab Cake Burger ($13.90)!

Skirt & Dirt

hawkerburgers-14

Opened by ex-One Faber Group chef Fabian Tan, Skirt & Dirt serves up affordable cheeseburgers in Tiong Bahru Market. Their signature Cheese Skirt Burger ($8) will instantly have you whipping out your phones for an IG story. Fanning around the beef patty was a crispy cheese skirt made of shaved cheddar that got slightly gooey towards the centre, making this one heck of a sinful indulgence. The beef patty itself was thick and you can clearly see the beef juices flowing out when you bite into the burger and the slightly toasted buns. The tangy sauce also worked in tandem with the salty, savoury flavours. In addition to other beef burgers like Truffle Mushroom Swiss Cheese & Rockets ($8), you can also opt for their Cheesy Chicken Katsu Burger ($6) and Fish Crisp with Tropical Salsa ($6) and even add on $3 to make it a set meal with choices of soup of the day, cajun fries or garden salad.

The Original Botak Jones

botakjones-07

Fans of the true OG Western food brand Botak Jones were extremely pleased to hear of the brand’s return. Since reopening last year, Botak Jones has quickly expanded and has just opened their fourth outlet in Buona Vista, along Holland Drive! Go big or go home with the Double Botak Burger ($17 for a la carte, $20 for a set) that came stuffed with two hulking flame-grilled beef patties draped in melted cheese alongside a handful of crisp lettuce. Cooked to an ideal medium-well, the juicy beef patties were seasoned to perfection. Sinking my teeth into it gave me a sense of comfort and opulence at the same time. If you think this burger is a monster, you should see the towering U-Crazy-What?! ($24.50 for a la carte, $27.50 for a set) that comes with three massive patties. Their other burgers are nothing to sneeze at either; be sure to give their Cajun Chicken Burger ($8 for a la carte, $11 for a set) and “The” Fish Burger ($9 for a la carte, $12 for a set) a go as well!
