Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice

When I asked in twitter for recommendations of the hawker stall to try in Tekka Centre, Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice was one of the highly recommended one.

This stall was originally opened by Uncle Yang and the old man has been braising duck rice for 60 years since he was a kid! But Rayner informed me that Uncle Yang has let to set up a stall in Hong Lim called Ah Heng Duck Rice. The current stall in Tekka Centre is now operated by his disciples.

It is my first time trying Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice so I can’t make a comparison with the past and present. But from the long queues seen during lunch time, I guess it still maintains its standard.

How do you usually eat your duck rice?

For me, I like my white rice drizzled with the dark sauce (lor), put a piece of duck slice into superb chilli sauce before adding a scoop of rice with sauce on top and eat it. I know it is a mouthful but it is shiok especially if the duck is well braised.

You know, some duck rice stalls, their dark sauce is plain salty and nothing else. Here, their dark sauce is very fragrant. The duck meat was rather tender and flavorful, it is still one of the best that i ever eaten. And their chilli is really good too. It is vinegar based with garlic, hence it is quite appetizing. No wonder the uncle sitting beside me can finish 2 bowls of rice!

I was curious about the goose part because I just did a research on the difference between goose and duck, so I wanted to have a plate of goose rice. But the stall owner told me that they no longer sell it because of the supply issue. It’s a pity.

Here’s a gentle reminder, come early because everything would likely to be sold out before 2pm!
