Located within Dunman Food Centre, Heng Heng Prawn Noodle Soup has been up and running for over ten years and many folks have given their stamp of approval when it comes to how consistently delicious the noodles here are. If you enjoy a classic bowl of prawn noodles (be it soup or dry) brimming with traditional flavours, this is definitely a place you should stop by!

The uncle runs the stall by himself and, while he’s not that fond of the camera, he always ensures that he fires up every order as quickly as possible. He even takes the extra step to personally bring your orders right to your table when it’s not too busy.

There are three types of noodles you can order here – regular prawn noodles, pork rib prawn noodles and pig tail prawn noodles. Choose between soup or dry versions, and portions of $3.50 and $4.

I opted for the soup version of the regular prawn noodles and the piping hot bowl came filled with a fragrant broth and yellow noodles, two prawns, pork slices, greens, beansprouts, pork lard pieces and fried shallots. The soup was not as robust as I would have liked it to be, but the gentle flavours still had hints of umami.

Albeit on the smaller side, the prawns, which have been conveniently de-shelled, were definitely fresh and had a good bite to them. The pork slices were fairly tender and a classic addition to a good bowl of traditional prawn noodles.

I also decided to give the pork ribs prawn noodles a go and chose the dry version. The yellow noods were well-coated in a sticky, spicy chilli paste that delivered a fantastic punch. There was also a slight smokiness infused into the chilli. It melded well with the aromatic fried shallots and sinful pieces of pork lard.

While the noodles fared pretty well, the pork ribs (which came in the small bowl of soup on the side), felt tough and dry to me and was a tad bland. The broth was the same as that in the soup version of the prawn noodles but in this case, the lightness of the soup made for a better match with the robust chilli paste of the dry noodles.

Heng Heng Prawn Noodle Soup definitely has that nostalgic, old-school taste in their prawn noodles, even more so when it comes to the soup. If that’s what you’re craving for, be sure to pop by Dunman Food Centre to get yourself a bowl or two!
