If you’re a fan of Hui Wei’s prawn noodles and lor mee situated in Mei Ling Market & Food Centre, you’ll be happy to know that they’ve recently opened a new stall in Woodlands. There wasn’t much information on their socials with regards to the opening but they’ve attracted quite a bit of attention based on the long lines during lunchtime.

Just like at their OG stall, you’ll be able to find simple offerings of Fried Fish Lor Mee ($3.80/4.80) and Prawn Noodle ($3.80/4.80), in both soup and dry versions. Condiments are laid out at the front counter so you can choose to add extra garlic and vinegar to your lor mee (I’d recommend doing so).

Crowned with an appetising ensemble of battered fish, pork slices, beansprouts and a braised egg, the yellow noodles were soaked in a thick, starchy gravy. While the texture was on point, the flavours were on the lighter side and weren’t as robust as I would have preferred. My word of advice is to really go heavy on the condiments(especially the vinegar, chilli and garlic) if you’re a fan of heavier flavours.

The deep-fried fish could have done with more batter and wasn’t nearly as crispy as those at other stalls I’ve tried. Nevertheless, the white flesh within was nice and flaky and I enjoyed how chunky the fried fish were in general. The braised pork slices were also quite tender and had nicely soaked up the gravy.

I decided to go for the soup version of the Prawn Noodle and was once again hit by waves of gentle flavours, which wasn’t necessarily bad! The noods, which didn’t have much of an alkaline taste so hooray for that, were topped with three pieces of prawn, fish cake slices, pork slices and crunchy pork lard pieces.

The broth was on the refreshing side and wasn’t too sweet, with light pulses of umami from the prawns used to boil the stock. If your stomach isn’t after too heavy of a meal with rich flavours, you’ll definitely find this soup very comforting.

While small in size, the prawns were plump and sweet. The meat was sliced thinly and you can taste hints of the prawn broth that had been adequately absorbed by it.

Hui Wei is a pretty good option for decent bowls of lor mee and prawn noodles, especially if you don’t want to fall into a complete food coma from too heavy a lunch. In fact, they’re also opening one more outlet in Queenstown at the end of the year so you can get your fix of Hui Wei’s lor mee and prawn noodles at three different places!
