Hup Seng duck rice is tucked away in a coffeeshop, surrounded by some of the oldest HDB blocks in Singapore, on Sin Ming Road.

I gave their specials, which include braised duck, braised pork, salted veg duck soup, and the staples(rice and porridge) a try.

First up, we had the duck. It is the star here and often the dish that people order. Well, it really stuck the landing. The duck was firm but not tough, and it had a nice layer of fat.

The flavour of the duck was also accentuated by the rich gravy, which did not utterly drench the meat, but coat it just enough so that the duck wasn’t dry.

The plain Teochew-style porridge was rather bland even with the gravy. But that’s perfect for those of you who want something a little healthier to offset some of the “sinfulness” from the meat.

I am biased towards braised pork, and I often value it above duck. My ideal braised pork would have soft meat, a not overly gummy fatty section, and a satisfying kick of greasiness.

And guess what? Hup Seng’s braised pork was exactly everything that I longed for.  It left me wanting more even after I cleaned the plate.

As traditional duck rice goes, it’s never complete without a chilli dip.

The well-concocted chilli, which was slightly sour, helped to cut through the heaviness of the duck, and added a distinct and addictive sourness to the meat.

However, those who are looking for a strong kick of spice will not find it here, as the chilli was more flavourful that it was spicy. I was dousing my meat in the chilli throughout the entire meal and never needed so much as a sip of water. Experiences may vary based on spice tolerance, though.

Lastly, we had the salted veg duck soup, which is not commonly found in other duck rice stalls. It was my first time trying it, so I wasn’t sure what to expect.

Would the soup be overly salty? Would the meat be too tough?

However, it’s safe to say that they’ve set the bar high. The slightly peppery soup had an alluring herbal aroma, and the drumstick’s perfectly tender flesh fell off the bone easily. It’s an absolute must-try, in my opinion.

If you’re looking to satisfy a duck rice craving in a cosy neighbourhood coffeeshop, this is the place for you.

However, they close right after lunchtime so don’t try to make this as a dinner destination!

Their portions are generous and prices are reasonable, so you can expect to spend lesser than $8 for a typical meat + rice + soup combo if you’re sharing with friends or family.
