Following a two-month renovation period, Food Opera has reopened at ION Orchard with a brand new look and an expanded line-up of 27 food brands and vendors, including 15 new entrants to the atrium. Expect to be regaled with sumptuous delights from Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh, Great World Noodle House, Java Kitchen Padang Padang, Xing Lou Seafood White Bee Hoon, Riverside Indonesian BBQ, Ah Yat Kitchen, and more! Here are some great deals.

Padang cuisine is the traditional food of ‘Urang Minang’ (Minang people) who inhabits West Sumatra, Indonesia, and retains its original taste. Whenever I drop by Food Opera at ION Orchard, Padang Padang is always one of my top choices.

By the same people behind Java Kitchen, recipes here are inspired by the owner’s grandmother – a third generation Peranakan from Indonesia. Hence, they use the best spices from Indonesia and make their paste from scratch to achieve that unbeatable aroma.

Like our local style chap chye peng, you can pick from a spread of tasty dishes to go with your rice. No MSG and preservatives are added. One of the must try is Ayam Kari ($3.50/drumstick or $5.50/quarter chicken) featuring tender chicken cooked in traditional Indonesian curry that is so lemak and very fragrant from the spices.

Sergeant Hainanese Chicken Rice certainly knows the key to achieving the perfect plate of greasy goodness, winning the hearts of many chicken rice fans. Its signature chicken rice is steamed to perfection so that satisfaction is definitely guaranteed.

But this time round, the focus is not on their chicken rice, but the shredded chicken hor fun that is offering 1-for-1 deal. Keeping the meat moist and tender, the chicken is lightly seasoned so it is not too oily yet you are able to get the flavours in a bite. I prefer the soup version as the broth is simmered for hours with silky rice noodles that is light but flavourful.

Not a stranger to many locals, Pepper Lunch is also available in Food Opera! Serving sizzling steaks, pastas, curry rice, and not forgetting their signature pepper rice, the joy is to cook your own meal with their specially crafted sauces.

Using a special electromagnetic cooker that is patented in Japan, the iron plate will heat up to 260°C in 70 seconds and remain hot at approximately 80°C for more than 20 minutes. Meat that is grilled at this temperature range remains tender and juicy. The hot plate also keeps food warm for a longer time such that customers can enjoy the full flavour of the dish. The Pepper Steak is their undisputed star. Using Australian Striploin, cook it to your desired bite and you will get a succulent and flavourful meal.

Housed within the IN GOOD COMPANY Concept Store at ION Orchard, Café by Plain Vanilla is a cosy 20-seater that serves aromatic organic coffee and tea, their signature cupcakes, housemade ice-cream, grilled sandwiches, salads and pasta. A café within a fashion store would fascinate anyone who walks through the door! I found myself being entertained by the different racks of beautifully designed stylish pieces before landing at a comfy space at Café by Plain Vanilla with a wide array of delectable fresh bakes. It’s quite a relaxing hideout amidst the hustle bustle, I must say. Now there’s more reason to drop by because they are offering 1 for 1 truffle aglio olio!

Truffle Aglio Olio ($17) is a luxe way to start a day. The al dente pasta linguine a good balance of garlic and truffle oil that is aromatic yet not overpowering. Served with shiitake, portobello, button mushrooms, pancette, cherry tomatoes and kale, it makes the pasta colourful and appealing with varying textures. Don’t forget to end your meal with their homemade breads, cakes and pastries. They serve Browns Mill Organic coffee as well, a seasonal triple-origin blend of medium roast beans roasted by the good people of Allpress Espresso.

Simply Wrapps

Simply Wrapps was started by three colleagues who spent collectively more than 50 years in the corporate world. By chance, they landed an assignment together in the very exotic city of Dubai, UAE and that was the time when friendship was developed and dream was created.

Being in the corporate world for many years, they worked hard but did not have proper nutritional food to keep them going. Especially for people who are always on the go with no time for a proper seat down meal, it became more difficult. Hence, they created Simply Wrapps to put all the goodness of different vegetables into a wrap or salad bowl with healthy dressing.

They have 5 different kinds of wraps – plain, wheat, spinach, lemongrass and tomato basil. The most popular one is wheat, that uses wholewheat grain imported from USA. I enjoy the Classic Caesar ($10.90) with crunchy romain lettuce, grilled chicken, parmesan cheese, croutons and boiled eggs.

Taking inspiration from their travel, they have created many international sauces. For some local flavours, the Singapore Mixed Seafood Salad ($11.50) is a great option. Even though the chilli crab dressing was a little too mild for me, it comes generously with shrimps, crab stick, carrots, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes. So much goodness in a bowl!
