Korean food is always a good idea, and you can’t go wrong with classics such as jjajangmyeon, soondubu soup and kimchi pancakes. With so many options for Korean food around Singapore, it’s hard to find the right place that hits the spot, especially when it comes to stalls in hawker centres and coffee shops. Entering our radar is Jeong’s Jjiajang, which is run by a native Korean from Daegu.

The brand first started out as a cloud kitchen concept that focuses on deliveries and takeaways in Tampines North. The many requests from customers led to them setting up a brick-and-mortar stall within a coffee shop tucked away in Bukit Merah Central. The Korean chef at the helm has more than 20 years of experience working in Korean establishments.

Here, you’ll find familiar dishes such as Jjajangmyeon ($8), Jjamppong ($10), Kimchi Soup ($9), Tangsuyuk ($12) and Doenjang Soup ($9) that taste like the real deal at pocket-friendly prices. Along with rice and noodle dishes are also popular sides such as Seafood Pancake ($10), Kimchi Pancake ($10) and Fried Dumpling ($5 for six pieces).

There’s a weekly lunch promotion that runs from Monday to Friday that lets you snag steaming hot bowls of Jjajangmyeon at $5.90, Jjamppong at $7.90, Soondubu Soup at $6.90 and Kimchi Soup at $6.90. Now, that’s what we call a steal!

My bowl of Jjajangmyeon came with a generous serving of black bean sauce atop a bed of noodles that were handmade from scratch. Give them a good toss and chow down on the soft, chewy noodles that are cooked to perfection. The thick sauce was robust and sweet, though I would have preferred it to be slightly stronger in flavour. The flavours were made even better with the diced onions and diced pork.

I also opted for the Soondubu Soup ($9) and the piping hot bowl was filled to the brim with a deliciously spicy broth and a heap of goods just waiting to be unearthed beneath. Dig up helpings of soft, silky-smooth tofu, clams, mussels and vegetables and gobble it all down with their fluffy white rice. This is definitely a dish that will warm you to the bones.

There was also a side of sauce served that I wasn’t too sure what it was supposed to go with, but I can say I’m a fan of the sweet tanginess of it.

Both dishes came with sides of kimchi and slices of pickled radish. I feel like I have to give them a special mention because while they might not seem like much, they had been well-pickled and were too addictive to be just mere side dishes.
