To be honest, I had not heard of Kacang Pool before making a trip down to Kacang Pool Special, located in Eunos Crescent Market and Food Centre. All I had to go off of was pictures of Kacang Pool on the internet, which reminded me of Mee Rebus sauce. Little did I know that so much flavour can be packed into such a small package!

Eaten primarily as breakfast food, Kacang Pool ($3) is a bean stew usually comprising fava beans. The stew is on the thinner side, but still contains nice bits of beans for added texture. The stew is made with coriander seeds, fennel and cumin, which add a nice warmth and depth of flavour. Ground cumin is also sprinkled on top of the stew for an added hit of spice.

The stew is also topped with raw green chillies and onions. My favourite part of the dish is the addition of a freshly fried egg! Mix the runny egg yolk with the bean stew, and squeeze in some fresh lime juice, and you’re all set. Some salt is served alongside, but I feel that the dish did not need the extra saltiness.

Two slices of bread come with the Kacang Pool for you to mop up all that deliciousness. However, the bread that I got was not warmed up enough, and did not have any char marks from toasting. However, the Kacang Pool was so delicious that I did not care too much about the less-than-ideal bread.

When I went to order the Kacang Pool, I simply could not resist ordering a serving of Roti John, which is a childhood favourite of mine. The Roti John ($3) came out looking very promising, with the exterior looking very nicely fried. However, I found the Roti John to be slightly dry. I would also prefer more minced meat, and onion, to add more crunch and flavour to the bread.

Kacang Pool Special definitely serves up one of the best Kacang Pools around. Every element of the dish works in harmony to make each bite exciting and oh-so-satisfying. While their other dishes were not as tasty, their Kacang Pool was so good that it ranks as one of my top breakfast meals now! It’s a shame that this stall is all the way in Eunos, but I will definitely come back again if I am in the area.
