Nasi Kerabu is a very famous dish in Kelantan and Terengganu, the east coast states of Malaysia. This is a less popular, but no less delicious, cousin of the Nasi Lemak. Nasi Kerabu literally means rice salad in English. Nasi is rice. Kerabu is salad.

You can have a taste of it at Kantan by the SIB’S in Golden Mile Food Centre. Blue pea rice is served with a protein of your choice, fresh herbs, toasted coconut, salted egg, fish crackers and more. Pro tip : mix everything together like how you would eat Nasi Ulam. This also means that you break up the salted egg into very small pieces and stir it with the rice, herbs and vegetables. I also crumble up the fish crackers and eat it with my hands.

Nasi Kerabu Kelantan (Herb Rice) is a visually appealing Malay rice dish served with a melange of aromatic herbs and choice of protein. Perhaps the most striking feature of this dish is the blue rice colored naturally with bunga telang (blue/butterfly pea flower). Some people may find blue rice strange but it is actually really pretty!

As the name suggest, this tasty dish originated in Kelantan. It consists of a variety of herbs, fresh vegetables, condiments, fish, and meats. No two servings of Nasi Kerabu is the same. There are some basic ingredients but the rest will depend on availability and what the cook wants to prepare that day.

Kantan by the SIB’S best-selling items are Percik Grilled Chicken ($7) and Ayam Goreng Berempah ($7). Both chicken were tender and finger-licking good! I love the latter — the crunchy fried chicken paired superbly well with the aromatic blue pea rice. They also have Honey Grilled Chicken which is glazed with their house-made black sauce.

The herbs and vegetables on top of the blue rice were pleasantly mild. The saltiness of the egg helped to flavour the fish. The bright orange chilli was excellent — tangy with a slightly sweet taste. The solok lada (green chili peppers stuffed with fish meat) was firm and was a great accompaniment to the meal. Don’t worry, it’s not spicy nor fishy.

My favourite was the Tiger Tears Beef ($8). Why tiger tears you ask? When the brisket is on the hot grill, oil from the fats( which resembles tears) in the meat will drip down the grill. Marinated fresh daily and grilled on the spot upon ordering, this dish is paired with their special home made sambal. Once you mix everything togther , that extra OOMMPPHH from their homemade chilli will have you hooked and you will definitely crave for more. Trust me!
