If you’re someone who’s tired of the usual red, slightly dry char siew, this new stall in Toa Payoh might just change your standards.

At KL Traditional Glass Char Siew Wanton Noodle, it’s all about that dark, caramelised KL-style char siew — glossy, slightly charred, and unapologetically fatty.

Not Your Usual Char Siew

The moment the plate arrived, I actually paused. I’m not even exaggerating when I say the sight of it took my breath away. The charred edges, that beautifully caramelised glaze catching the light, and beneath it all… tender, fatty meat that looked like it would just melt in your mouth.

And yes — when the boss asks if you’re okay with half fat half lean, just say yes. This kind of KL-style char siew, you must go for 半肥瘦.

From KL Roast Meats to Toa Payoh

The stall is run by Ah Lun, whose family has been in the roast meat business in Kuala Lumpur for years. He grew up helping out from a young age, so this is something he’s been doing his whole life.

After moving to Singapore, he worked as a roast chef at places like Yan Palace in Chinatown before eventually opening his own stall here in Toa Payoh.

You can really taste that experience in the way the char siew is executed — it’s not just roasted meat, it’s craft.

The Noodles: Springy, Savoury, Addictive

The wanton mee here is equally satisfying. The noodles are springy with a firm bite, tossed in a rich, dark sauce that coats every strand.

There’s also a generous addition of lard, which just elevates the entire bowl — giving it that extra fragrance and depth that makes you keep going back for more.

More Than Just Char Siew

While the char siew is clearly the star, the stall also offers a hearty combination of wantons, dumplings, and even braised chicken feet as part of their signature bowl.

The wantons themselves are decent — not the standout — but honestly, you’re here for the char siew and noodles anyway. It’s good enough to carry the entire dish.
