Korean Waffle Ice Cream - owners

Opened by former banker Herbert Bong and his uncle, Desmond, Korean Waffle Ice Cream is located in Lorong 1 Toa Payoh Market and Food Centre. Having a passion for cooking, Herbert had learnt some recipes in his free time.

This recently-opened hawker stall selling sweet desserts also serves up some savoury croissants and Mac & Cheese at affordable prices. Don’t be expecting Korean Street Waffles loaded with fresh whipped cream that you see all over Tik Tok though. Here, the waffles are the typical ones we see in cafes and ice cream parlours.

Knowing that their ice cream is made in-house, I knew I had to get a single scoop ($3.50) to go with my waffles ($3 for single/$5 for double). I opted for their Thai Milk Tea flavour since the Belgian Chocolate was sold out. If you’re a fan of Thai Milk Tea, you’re in for a treat. Not only was this creamy, the tea flavours were prominent and it wasn’t overly sweet too! The waffles had a nice crispy exterior, and a light, fluffy interior.

The flavours of house-made ice cream available are on a rotation basis, so keep your eyes peeled for what’s available.

To satisfy my sweet tooth, I got their S’more Croffle ($2.50) to munch on. Croffles are made by pressing croissant dough onto a waffle pan to take the shape of a waffle. Before being drizzled with some chocolate syrup, the waffle was topped with some marshmallows which were then slightly toasted with a blowtorch. The gooey marshmallows paired really well with the slightly chewy croffle. The sweetness overload definitely made this a rather sinful dessert.

Besides the S’more Croffle, they also offer a Cinnamon Sugar variation ($2 for 1 piece, $3.50 for 2 pieces) and an Oreo & Cream Croffle ($2.50).

Craving for something savoury after indulging in their sweets, I went for the Ham Mac & Cheese ($9.90). The Mac & Cheese was extremely creamy. However, the texture of the cheese can be improved — it was kind of granulated. They were rather generous with the amount of chicken ham mixed into the pasta and while the saltiness of the ham paired well with the creaminess of the cheese, it was a little too salty for my liking.

The brown spots of crispy cheese were crisp, and added a nice crunch to the dish.

Truffle lovers can consider the Truffle Mac & Cheese ($10.90) that comes with chicken ham, mushrooms, and truffle oil. A no frills, Original Mac & Cheese ($8.90) is also available.

For its price, the waffles here are undeniably a steal. On top of all that, they also offer other bakes such as croissants and madeleines. Did I mention that they open at 7am for those who want to indulge in ice cream and waffles for breakfast?
