Singaporeans are no stranger to Sichuan cuisine, and our team here at Miss Tam Chiak especially loves all things ma and la. So when we heard about the opening of Kuan Zhai Alley (宽窄巷子), we got ready our bellies and taste buds for a great time.

Situated in the heart of the CBD at Capital Square on Church Street, the tastefully-decorated restaurant welcomes discerning diners who have a penchant for fine Chinese cuisine. Guests can expect a luxurious atmosphere and private rooms, adorned with Asian handicrafts and famous Sichuan elements (landscape, bamboo, koi, panda and spices). There are even three towering LED screens that add a touch of extravagance to elevate your dining experience.

Your palates will definitely be pampered by the myriad of bold flavours awaiting. Whether you’re a fiery daredevil who loves chillies or someone who prefers sweet and sour creations, you won’t be disappointed by what the expert Sichuan chefs whip up.

Kuan Zhai Alley prides itself on the use of only the freshest ingredients and traditional cooking methods. Undeniably one of the bestsellers, the signature Braised Fish with Sour Cowpea features a fresh whole fish in a bubbling spicy broth that will tickle the fancy of spice lovers. The pristine flesh of the fish carried a lovely natural sweetness that was well complemented by the addictive broth, yum!

The Sliced Beef and Ox Tongue in Chilli Sauce is a cold dish crafted for spice fanatics. We loved that the house-made chilli sauce had just the right amount of flavour to bring out the brilliance of the tender ox tongue and juicy beef, without overshadowing the two stars in any way. We appreciated the cucumber slices which lent a refreshing crunch and a kick of coldness that contrasted with the heat nicely. This will certainly whet your appetite!

Craving something spicy and peppery at the same time? Go for the Double Flavoured Chicken (spicy and peppery) which brings you the best of both worlds. We couldn’t decide which we prefer as they were both scrumptious treats!

As a big fan of prawns, I couldn’t wait to dive into the Golden Shrimp Balls dressed in a tangy citrus sauce. Armed with a light crisp, the plump prawns had that distinctive and characteristic sweetness of prawns that I adore. I could easily polish off an entire plate of this myself.

Another stunner that Kuan Zhai Alley is exceptionally proud of is the Charcoal Smoked Beef Ribs. Before the dish even arrived at our table, we caught a whiff of a captivating aroma, and we knew we were in for a treat. Meticulously and masterfully smoked, the delicious beef ribs were sliced to perfection. Tantalising on its own, but even better with the dry rub on the side — you can look forward to an explosion of flavours!

A meal is never complete without some greens so don’t miss the Griddle Shredded Cabbage which is a great palate cleanser.

Probably the most enthralling and fascinating dish on the menu is this beautiful paintbrush set which looks almost like the real thing. The tips of the paintbrushes are edible. Wonder what it tastes like? It’s reminiscent of the classic Teochew flaky mooncake. Dip the brushes into the ink dip (chocolate sauce) and sink your teeth into one of the most interesting desserts ever!

Other delectable Sichuan delights such as “Dan Dan” noodles, succulent braised lamb ribs, and Sichuan-style dumplings are offered on the a la carte menu as well. They have vegetarian options too. Coming in bigger groups and prefer set menus? Don’t worry, Kuan Zhai Alley have you covered with a bunch of menus catered to different group sizes and budgets.

Complete your dining experience with their amazing cocktail program. I’ll recommend the Queen, Cosmopolitan, and Pornstar Martini. Kuan Zhai Alley’s contemporary take on alcohol and Sichuan food pairing is a praiseworthy one. The newcomer to the scene also boasts a wide selection of alcoholic drinks so if you’re up for wines or whiskies, just let the team know. You will be well taken care of by the attentive service team here.
