Fans of Lavender Fish Soup when they were located in, well Lavender, will be pleased to know they are well and still in business. The popular fish soup stall has simply relocated to a quiet coffee shop in Bedok four months ago and sees a steady stream of new customers as well as regulars who have followed them to their new location.

The couple running the stall had been in Lavender for over 20 years, and their quality control over their ingredients has been properly maintained till this day. Even now, they wake up at 5am during the days they’re open for business to prepare their broth and freshly fry up their fried fish and egg floss.

Go for the classic Sliced Fish Beehoon/Soup ($4.50) and Fried Fish Beehoon/Soup ($4.50), or treat yourself to their hearty Fish Head Beehoon/Soup ($5). In search of the ultimate comfort food? There’s nothing quite like a bowl of Teochew Fish Porridge ($4.50) to warm your bellies.

Enjoy the best of both worlds with the Fried Fish + Sliced Fish Soup ($6). First off, the broth was amazingly flavourful and full-bodied. Each slurp brought forth a savoury wave of umami with just a tinge of sweetness. I’d definitely recommend getting a bowl of rice ($0.70) and allowing the grains to soak up every bit of goodness from the soup.

The sliced batang fish was nicely tender and while the batter on the fried fish could be tastier (where it maintains the sinful fried taste), the fish was still clearly fresh. The clean taste of the tofu chunks balanced out the bowl and of course, you have to get the egg floss ($0.70) too. I would have liked them to be just a tad crispier, though.

My absolute favourite, however, was their special homemade chilli sauce that comes with garlic and fermented soybean paste. Pair it with the fish and that’s a taste of heaven right there.

I also got the Seafood Soup ($5) that came with thick slices of batang fish, clams, prawns and tofu. The meat of the clams were soft and very briny. As for the prawns, they were sweet and fresh and have been conveniently de-shelled, so bonus points for that.

The broth in this bowl was more on the herbal side and had more of a vegetable base. It’s still equally comforting, but I still favour the soup in the first bowl more.

I can definitely see myself making a return trip to Lavender Fish Soup when I’m in the Bedok ‘hood. Not only is their food simple and delicious, the couple running the stall offers excellent customer service as well. What more can you ask for?
