My search for the best wanton noodles in Singapore brought me to Ayer Rajah Food Centre.

Lee Kee has always been popular during lunch time, and today was no exception. They’ve been known to cater lunch for the factories and offices nearby so the team at Lee Kee moves really quickly to meet the huge orders. Hence, you won’t need to wait for long even if the queue is crazy. The menu features local favourites such as wanton noodles, chicken rice, and duck rice.

I ordered the Wanton Noodles ($3), Duck Drumstick Noodles ($6) and the Dumpling Soup ($3).

I was stopped when I was about to take my tray back to my table. “Haven’t put the sauce yet,” the auntie said. I was puzzled. Why would my wanton noodles need sauce? The auntie then ladled a light brown broth onto my noodles.

I was so pleased with the texture of the Wanton Noodles ($3), which retained its springiness even with the sauce drizzled over.

But, I was more thrilled about the sauce which resembled a light XO sauce. It made the noodles really appetising and enjoyable.

I learnt from the owners that the sauce is painstakingly made from a variety of ingredients, of which I only managed to get “shiitake (冬菇)”. The owners shared that some customers look for the usual combination of chilli sauce and oyster sauce, but they insist on sticking to their own concoction.

The char siew and wantons were cooked well. I thought that the wanton skin was a tad too thick though.

I was already satisfied with my lunch thus far, but the Roast Duck Drumstick Noodles ($6) would push me to a point beyond satisfaction.

Glistening skin, glorious amount of fat, and tender meat — all the makings of a great roast duck. Lee Kee certainly checked all of the boxes. Not to mention, you also get a plate of noodles with that delicious sauce.

dumpling

The Dumpling Soup ($3) had 7 dumplings which were filled with minced meat, shrimp and turnip. An enjoyable side dish, but nothing to shout about.

Lunch hour is always a mad rush and the staff will catch a breather after the madness dies down. I managed to have a quick chat with the lovely and friendly lady boss just as I was about to leave.

“Such pleasant and hardworking people, and such a good plate of noodles,” I said to myself as I left the food centre, with a smile on my face.
