Jawa Mee is a rare find in Singapore. Curious after a friend’s suggestion, I decided to visit Legency Jawa Mee in Toa Payoh.

Legency has garnered a loyal following among folks from Malaysia, with hometown compatriots flocking here for a taste of nostalgia. Edmund’s family operates a well-established Jawa Mee business in Sungai Petani.

The essence of Jawa Mee lies in the sauce. Traditionally, the sauce is crafted by simmering a medley of pumpkin, potato, sweet potato, tomato, onion, chili pepper, and more in water. Compared to its cousin dish, Mee Rebus, Jawa Mee offers a lighter flavour profile.

Expect a bed of yellow noodles and bean sprouts, generously bathed in a bright flavourful sauce. With a subtle hint of spiciness and a delicate whisper of nuttiness, the sauce is definitely sweeter than that of a Mee Rebus. The dish is topped with soft tau kwa, caramelized cuttlefish, onion, and spices, lending a sweet-savory umami to the luscious sauce.

A must-have with the dish is their homemade golden-brown fried cracker, which adds a delightful crunch to the ensemble. Edmund proudly mentioned, “I fry the cracker myself, it’s unique to us.”

If you’re a Malaysian working in Singapore, longing for a taste of home, visit Legency Jawa Mee which offers familiar flavours that will surely satisfy. Plus, they also have a vegetarian-friendly option.
