After reading Makansutra’s post about Leng Heng BBQ & Claypot Deluxe ending their business on 10 April, we made a trip down tonight just to eat our favourite claypot duck with salted vegetable soup and prawn cake for one last time.

This famous zichar stall at East Coast Lagoon Food Centre has been serving claypot duck with salted vegetable soup for more than half a century, together with other dishes like oyster omelette, lala, chilli crabs, BBQ stingray and more. Helming the kitchen is Ah Kim who started since he was a teenage helping out his dad and now, he is the one and only who cooks every single dishes in the menu by himself upon order. Sadly, Ah Kim’s leg can no longer withstand long hours of standing, and they decided to call it a day.

We came as early as 5.15pm to Leng Heng this evening and ordered the same old dishes that we love – sambal chilli lala, BBQ stingray, prawn pancake and the famous claypot salted vegetable and duck soup. Guess what, our food only came at 6.45pm. News about them closing has attracted a long queue and they could hardly manage. By the time our food came, they had already stop taking orders for the night and those who ordered, got to wait for approximately 3 hours. But what to do, this is the last week you can have their claypot salted vegetable and duck soup. We definitely got to grab the chance!

Their claypot duck with salted vegetable soup is what everyone came for. Served piping hot, the soup is intensely flavourful with fork tender meat which falls right off the bone. The sambal chilli lala had small clams swimming in a slightly sweet orange sauce.

The BBQ sambal stingray was very dry today, perhaps due to the overwhelming response. The juicy prawn cakes is another must-try. Made from squid paste, chopped prawns, water chestnuts, carrots, it is pan fried till the skin is crispy. Our total meal is $53.

This post is written not to add on the queue or stress, but I think it is meaningful to pen down their signatures for one last time. I am glad that we made it down tonight to have their claypot duck and salted vegetable soup again. If you are intending to go down, my advice for you is to be there as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
