Lighthouse Bistro Unveiled a New Menu after a Major Overhaul
Having served mainly members of the Singapore Maritime Officers Union since 2003, Lighthouse Bistro has gone through a near-complete overhaul with fresh faces, updated interior, and newly styled menu selections.
Located along Jellicoe Road, the restaurant was a popular family restaurant and social venue for members of the union long before the area was known as a “foodie hotspot”. Now, after 12 years of being the beacon for both local and foreign seafarers, Lighthouse Bistro is now helmed by a new management team, led by its executive director and restaurant consultant Isaac Tan.
A key challenge in Lighthouse Bistro’s rebranding process was re-inventing a menu that would reflect the restaurant’s maritime identity without being pretentious. After much experimenting with new ingredients and spices, Isaac and his team have created a contemporary selection of Asian-influenced
meat and seafood dishes.
We started our lunch with an appetizers of Salmon’s Milk Bath ($10), featuring a pairing of gently poached organic salmon in milk and light cream broth, seasoned with chilli, ginger, bok choy and enoki mushrooms. It was easy to drink and gentle on the palette. North American Scallops ($15) was drizzled with tom yum cauliflower puree and paired with tender grilled squids.
A dish that speaks the most about the restaurant’s maritime identity is the Fishermen’s Board ($18), a seafood platter of Atlantic prawns, calamari, black mussels and deep-fried chunks of dory accompanied with a light-whipped Orange Mayonnaise and a House Salad. Our lunch just got better!
For mains, Lighthouse Bistro’s Tiger Fish & Fries ($19) is fried in an authentic Tiger Beer batter, and served with seaweed battered fries along with an orange mayonnaise sauce. This is definitely one of the better ones I had – the fish was crispy on the outside yet soft and moist on the inside. The Tiger Beer element probably gave it the final burst.
Moving away from the bistro’s signature seafood selection, is a Black Onyx Angus Steak ($39), a 3MB+ Australian steak – paired with a beautiful potato risotto, turkey bacon and red wine sauce – is a must try with its ‘melt in your mouth’ flavour. For non-beef lovers, the East Atlantic Sea Perch ($23) is a good option. The fillet is resting on Chef’s garlic mash potatoes and french beans, paired with capsium sauce and garnished with dill. The sea perch has a firmer texture which pairs well with the distinctive capsicum pepper sauce. I didn’t like the pairing of french beans though.
A dish that was kept from their previous menu is the Malaysian Angel Hair ($17). This is also my favourite dish amongst all. As I am typing this, I can literally taste the noodles in my mind. Done in the Malaysian style, the western angel hair pasta is stir-fried with tiger prawns, squid & black mussels and finished off with spicy sambal. There is a rich wok hei in the noodles and the spicy sambal brings a delicious umami flavour. This dish will make me come back here again.
Lighthouse Bistro also offers a small dessert selection, including a perfectly sized Salted Chocolate & Caramel cake ($13), with 72% cocoa chocolate mousse and creamy caramel seated on a French chocolate biscuit base; and the PP. Lighthouse Cake ($10), a chef-baked banana cake served with a scoop of coconut Ice-cream sprinkled with cookie crumble and berries.
Honestly, I have passed by this bistro so many times without noticing its existence, perhaps due to the uninviting exterior. Hence I am unable to give a comparison. But Isaac did share with me what it was like previously and I like what I see now, a more modern interior with emphasis on presentation, yet keeping the price affordable.
