Craving for some authentic Penang-style rojak from across the border? You’re in luck!

Lim Bo 林伯 Fresh Fruits Rojak in Joo Chiat rose from humble beginnings as a roadside stall in Damansara Jaya, Kuala Lumpur. The stall was helmed by Lim Tong Lai or more known as Lim Bo, who has been hawking for over 40 years in Malaysia.

Singaporean Leong Gwo Wei chanced upon Lim Bo’s stall during a family trip t0 Malaysia three years ago. Leong then decided to learn and master the craft of rojak-making under Lim Bo, before setting up a shop of his own in Singapore in April 2021. Leong’s decided to re-create Lim Bo’s rojak when he saw the potential of the Malaysian’s recipe for success here.

Right off the bat, Leong’s rendition of rojak is unlike any rojak here. First, the staff fries up fish skin, you tiao, and prawn fritters — typical finds at a Ngoh Hiang stall. The staff then mixes them, and curated seasonal chilled fruits, with a prawn paste sauce, crushed peanuts and chilli sauce.

There are three sizes of rojak : $5, $8, and $10. I had the $5 plate and added fish skin(+$3). The fried fish skin was super crispy, and its umami went well with the sweet freshly cut assortment of fruits (pineapple, cucumber, and turnip). The you tiao was on the crispier side and crumbled easily once you bite into it. I found the sauce to be of a runnier consistency, with a subtle prawn paste taste, which differed from the rojak sauces we usually see. While I still prefer a heavier and thicker sauce, this style of rojak is definitely a good option for those who don’t fancy the usual jelakness that rojak might bring.

Next, I tried an $8 plate with prawn fritters. The airy thin crackers were harder to munch through than the you tiao. Nevertheless, the savoury notes enlivened the rojak.

Overall, the unusual toppings and freshness of the fruits at Bo 林伯 Fresh Fruits Rojak are worth making a trip down for!
