Here in sunny Singapore, there is no shortage of great Chinese food. From hawker centre favourites such as chicken rice to refined Cantonese dim sum and la-mian, we are honestly spoilt for choice.

However, this is not the case in many Western countries. To suit American palate and adapt to the limited availability of ingredients, Chinese immigrants had to alter their traditional recipes, making them meatier and sweeter. This gave birth to Chinese American cuisine, which boasts dishes such as Chow Mein, Fortune Cookies and General Tso’s Chicken.

Lokkee Shopfront

Despite this infamy, or maybe because of it, Lokkee is on a mission to cheekily redefine recipes found in Chinatowns all over the world, with top notch ingredients.

So, if you are looking for a place to celebrate a truly unique Chinese New Year, why not head to Lokkee and try out their luxurious Chinese New Year offerings, and grab a signature dish or two along the way!

Pen Cai is a must have when you want to celebrate Chinese New Year in opulence and luxury, and the Royal Treasure Bowl (皇家聚宝盆菜) ($288++) is a showstopper. Featuring a whopping 13 ingredients such as 10-Head Abalone, Dried Oysters, Pork Shank, Fresh Scallops, Live Prawns, Smoked Duck Breast and more, this dish takes center stage in Lokkee’s Chinese New Year Menu. Feast on this decadent dish, originally served to the emperors of ancient China!

No Chinese New Year gathering is complete without a platter of fresh Prosperity Yu Sheng ($48++) to usher in the New Year. Enjoy smoked Norwegian Salmon slices draped atop mushrooms, yams and fresh greens. Health conscious diners can also rest easy and toss to great health in 2020 with Lokkee’s lower-in-sugar Yu Sheng sauce! Some other highlights include Prosperity Yu Sheng, Fried Glutinous Rice with Assorted Preserved Meat, and Superior Herbal Chicken.

Lokkee also has a wide range of delicious festive gifts that are perfect for friends and family or for business associates. Try the TungLok Nian Gao, which comes in delectable flavours such as Traditional, Pandan or Black Sesame ($22+ per box). These flavours pair exceptionally well with the soft and chewy Nian Gao. If you’re after something extra special, consider the Red Dates Nian Gao ($28+ per box), which helps boost immunity with its various nutrients and vitamins!

Not to be missed is Lokkee’s unique range of signature dishes. These creations represent Lokkee’s mission to provide a uniquely Western spin on Chinese Classics, and I must say that these dishes really impressed. Each dish was extravagant, with an unmistakable “wow” factor.

Nowhere is this wow factor bigger than in the Awesome Flaming Pineapple Beef ($34++). Beef cubes are slowly braised with chunks of pineapple, rendering the meat superbly tender, saucy and sweet. The braise is served in a pineapple husk, which is then set ablaze for an awesome theatrical show of fire.

The ‘Bakkwa’ Bacon salad ($34++) is the Pineapple Beef’s best icy companion. Look forward to dry ice enveloping your table in a thick, cool cloud. East and West meet in this dish, where bacon strips are grilled ‘bakkwa’ style. The addictive bacon is paired with an oriental salad and lotus root croutons.

For those who love taking care of their skin, ‘The Mermaid’ ($80++) is made for you. Grilled Barramundi fillets and whole fish maw are soaked in a collagen broth, which is said to make your skin soft and supple. Skin benefits aside, the barramundi was grilled excellently, while the collagen broth was extremely flavourful yet clean tasting.

If I had to pick one thing to eat for the rest of my life, Lokkee’s Wagyu Truffle ‘Hor Fun’ ($68++) might just be it. Crispy Hor Fun Noodles are paired with premium A4 grade Wagyu Beef, with a decadently rich truffle sauce poured over. The crispiness of the noodles contrasted extremely well with the soft, buttery texture of the beef. Lokkee’s menu says that this dish is for 2-3 people, but I may just be able to prove them wrong on that one!

Everything about Lokkee shows its commitment to bring refined Chinese Cuisine with a playful Western twist to customers. At first glance, Lokkee’s decor will remind you of a traditional Chinese palace. However, take a closer look at the details and you will find hidden nods to Western culture, like characters from Star Wars featured in Chinese-style artwork.
