Malaysia Style Kampong Chicken – Super Fragrant Chicken Rice & Curry Chicken Noodles in Toa Payoh

Tucked away in a coffee shop just a short walk away from Toa Payoh MRT is a stall that simply goes by the name Malaysia Style Kampong Chicken, and it specialises in just that — Malaysian-style chicken rice, as well as curry chicken noodles. What exactly is the difference between our regular chicken rice and their rendition? That’s what we’re here to find out.

Run solely by a Malaysian hawker, the stall has been in operation for a year and a half. While the owner uses kampong chicken like most of the chicken rice hawkers, he mentioned that the key of Malaysian-style chicken rice lies in the flavours of the grains itself. He was tight-lipped about the secret of it though, only laughing and saying, “try it yourself and see.”

Go for a well-rounded meal with the Kampong Chicken Rice Set ($5.80 for breast, $6.80 for drumstick for one pax) that comes with a side of whiteball bean sprouts. Of course, there’s your standard Roasted Chicken Rice ($4), Chicken Drumstick Rice ($5.50) and Shredded Chicken Hor Fun ($4.50) too.

I opted for the classic Kampong Steamed Chicken Rice ($4.50) and the slices of chicken breast meat were drizzled in a soy sauce and sesame oil blend. The meat was very tender and paired well with the fragrant, savoury sauce mix. Pair it with the dark soy sauce and their house-made ginger and chilli sauces. The chilli especially had a good mix of tanginess and spice.

The chicken rice itself was definitely a highlight. One bite was enough to fill my mouth with a strong and flavourful aroma. The grains were super addictive. I can safely say that this was one of the most fragrant chicken rice I’ve had. The soup on the side was light, making it a good palate cleanser.

I also decided to give their signature Curry Chicken Noodle ($5/6/7) a go. Also modelled after Malaysian-style curry noodles, the roux was savoury and slightly creamy with a big hit of spice. There was a slight whiff of alkaline from the yellow noods but it was quickly overpowered by the flavours of the curry broth.

The boiled potatoes were just a tad too much on the soft side but not to the point where they were mushy. The pieces of tau pok had soaked up an adequate amount of the curry but still stayed slightly firm. This was definitely a generous bowl of curry noodles as there were large pieces of tender chicken.

Malaysia Style Kampong Chicken is certainly a stall worth checking out, with the chicken rice and curry chicken noodles proving to be rather solid options for lunch or dinner!
