Economic bee hoon has always been one of my favourite breakfast go-tos ever since I was a kid. I’ve always loved having a wealth of choices to mix and match the perfect set for myself (and that’s loooooots of meat). There are even some places that do bee hoon so well that I’m all for getting a packet of just that alone to dabao home. Making its way onto my list of best economic bee hoon is 美味咖喱杂菜 Mei Wei Economic Bee Hoon.

The stall is located in the Poh Ho Restaurant coffee shop, which is snugly situated in the residential area along 7 Crane Road. I almost missed the stall even though it was right in front of me. Although I can’t say it’s really on me because there weren’t a lot of ingredients displayed because most of them have already run out, courtesy of the early-morning crowd (okay, that one’s on me because I only arrived at 10am).

Since there wasn’t much to choose from, I just told the uncle to pile my plate of bee hoon with one of everything that was left. While there wasn’t a single green item (sorry, not sorry), the plate boasted a mouthwatering sight – and smell – of luncheon meat, fried fish fillet, fried egg, sausages and a fried chicken wing, along with a mini-mountain of sambal chilli on the side. Guess I’ll be starting my diet tomorrow instead.

The savoury bee hoon was a beautiful brown, and was fried to perfection as it’s neither too wet nor too dry. The holy trinity of soy sauce, black sauce and oyster sauce evenly coated every strand and was the definition of 杨美 (mei wei): delicious. The spicy-sweet chilli further elevated the taste of the bee hoon and left a slight tingling which lingered at the back of my throat briefly as I continued eating.

The luncheon meat and fried fish fillet were sliced thinner than what I’m used to getting at other stalls but they were still tasty. The latter especially stood out as its batter is specially handmade to achieve that light crisp on the outside while keeping the fish tender on the inside. Even though it wasn’t freshly fried and had been out for a while, it was still pretty good.

The same could be said for the chicken wing; the desired crunch was no longer there but flavour-wise, it held out fairly well.

Lesson of the day: you definitely have to make your way here early. And by early, seeing that their stall opens at 6.30am, I mean super early. If only it was closer to home so I could eat the bee hoon whenever I wanted…sobs. But for the crispy chicken wings, delicious bee hoon and my pick of the other ingredients I missed out on, I will bring out “early-morning” me and make my way back here for sure!
