The entire Hamilton Road is bustling with cafes and bakeries, from the likes of Lucid to For The People and La Levain. Muslim-owned Missus joins the list with a speciality in Grilled Cheese Sandwiches and some Mid-Eastern influenced desserts.

With a very aesthetically-pleasing Balinese-inspired interior, the cafe boasts some cozy nooks perfect to chill out in, and I adored the floor length windows which let in ample natural light. I’d suggest popping by after 11, as that is when their Grilled Cheese Sandwiches are available.

Although it did sound like quite a bizarre combination at first, the Kaya Cheese Toast ($9) was a big hit with me. The sweetness from the kaya was countered by the slight saltiness of the cheese — Colby and Provolone were used here. I also liked how the bread was toasted well, giving it a slight crunch, but still having a softness to it. You have to try this contemporary take on a classic traditional breakfast!

I was recommended the Slumdog Grillionaire ($19) by the staff, and I enjoyed its unique flavours. I would say it is quite similar to a Masala Dosa, with the masala potato and coriander pesto drawing parallels between the grilled sandwich and Masala Dosa. The tomato tamarind chutney served on the side complemented the sandwich well, with components such as cumin and curry leaves giving additional flavour. I did, however, feel that it was quite pricey.

I could not go without having the Date Pudding with Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream ($12.90). The homemade toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream sang harmoniously with the Medjool date cake, tied together by a coffee nut crumble. The cake itself was not too dense, but I just wished the overall portion of the cake and ice cream could have been a tad more generous. While the crumble was not the main character, I thoroughly enjoyed the buttery bits, though the coffee flavours were absent.

Still in their soft launch phase, the cafe can do with a few tweaks in my opinion. However, I had a very satisfying meal and will definitely be back for more. Come down and support this new establishment!
