There’s plenty of good food to be found in Sengkang and one of them is definitely the prata at Mohamed Javed Indian Muslim Food. Located just a short walk away from Kupang LRT, the stall is known for their plates of delicious, buttery prata but many come flocking for popular dishes such as nasi briyani and Indian rojak as well.

The stall has been up and running since 2016 and the prata chefs have been well-trained by the man behind the stall — Mr Wahid who learnt the ropes from his own father. Copious amounts of butter are used in the preparation, before the prata is flipped repeatedly and cooked on the stove. Do take note that they have designated timings for prata orders(7.30am to 1pm and 4.30pm to 9.30pm).

A customer I chatted with was also raving about their Indian rojak. You can build your rojak platter with any ingredient of your choice (there’s a minimum order of four pieces, and the cost ranges from $1 to $4). Hand your plate over to the staff so they can fry the ingredients for you.

They also offer quite a few mains such as Murtabak ($7/9/11), Roti John ($4.50), Nasi Biryani ($6/6.50), Mee Kuah ($5) and Nasi Goreng ($4.50).

Their Plain Prata goes for $1.20 a piece, and other prata options such as Cheese ($2.20), Egg ($1.80), Onion ($1.40) and Tissue Prata ($3) are available as well. Crispy on the outside, and nice and doughy on the inside, the buttery prata was, to my surprise, slightly sweet. This would 100% appeal to folks who can’t resist sugar with their prata! The prata is especially yummy when paired with their thick and heady mutton curry.

The Coin Prata’s ($4 for six pieces) flavours were even more concentrated compared to the regular prata. Each little disc was intensely delicious, and tasted absolutely heavenly with the fish curry which was saltier but highly addictive with the right kick of spice.

Some of the best things about Indian Rojak are its myriad of colours, and appealing flavours that don’t overwhelm. I love how all the ingredients were fried to perfection without becoming too overcooked or coming off as greasy. The platter came topped with perennial inclusions of onions, cucumbers and green chilli.

The crunchy and savoury Ikan Bilis featured fried anchovies wedged into deep-fried flour. I also loved how the potato within the Flour W/ Potato was boiled to perfection and perfectly complemented the chewiness of the bright orange batter. As for the Flour W/ Cabbage, it was brightened up with bits of corn.

Don’t miss the Flour W/ Big Prawn that was beautifully crisp on the outside while doughy on the inside. It was pretty tasty due to the chopped up prawn inside. The Kuchai (Vegetable) was also an interesting piece that added character to the flavourful mix and of course, you can’t skip out on the Flour W/ Egg. The best part was the vibrant and sweet red sauce that tied the whole dish together with a nice jam-like consistency and curry hint.

Without a doubt, Mohamed Javed Indian Muslim Food is a place I’d travel to again for prata and Indian rojak. Their nasi briyani is also highly raved about and even said to be sold out before 2pm so that’s just another reason to make your way to Sengkang!
