The current Civil Defence Academy (CDA) at Jalan Bahar was established in 1999. Prior to that, there was a Civil Defence Camp down the road. The now-defunct army camp has now been revamped into a one stop shop, housing an open-air food court, Sheng Siong supermarket, and a warehouse. Nestled within the food court is a stall selling fried hokkien mee and carrot cake.

Helmed by a loving couple, together with a young chef manning the Hokkien mee wok, the stall offers an interesting variety of dishes — from your regular Hokkien Mee and Fried Carrot Cake, to more extravagant dishes such as Slipper Lobster (aka Crayfish) Fried Hokkien Mee.

We went all out and had the Premium Fried Hokkien Mee ($25) which was packed with premium ingredients. Crayfish, prawns, lala, squid, and even roast pork belly topped the massive plate which could feed 2-3 pax.

The wok hei was very apparent in every mouthful, while the noodles were neither too wet nor dry. Unlike at some other stores, thick bee hoon and yellow noodles are used in the Hokkien mee here. The pork belly was also quite big in size, and the prawns and lala were fresh. Every mouthful left me wanting more; and the very strong wok hei, paired with a dip in their belachan chilli, was the perfect combination.

Although the location is definitely ‘ulu’, I would really recommend making the trip here for their wok hei filled goodness.
