Opened by a husband-and-wife duo, One Fattened Calf is located in the heart of One North. The small space houses a large open kitchen where you can see the passionate group of chefs at work, and where their potato buns are freshly made in-house.

One Fattened Calf is known for its Butterburger ($15), so I had to give it a shot. The unique “xiao long bao-like” wrapping took me by surprise. The 2 thick slabs of grass-fed butter sandwiched between the well-toasted potato buns made the burger a tad oily, but definitely enhanced the flavours, making the ensemble more fragrant. It was sinfully good, but be sure to chomp it down fast as the butter does melt quite quickly.

In general, the patties here were just slightly thinner than what’s offered at other burger joints, but they sure were cooked to perfection with a pretty pink in the centre, and a nice crisp exterior. I am not usually a big fan of pickles, but their house-made pickles were thinly sliced and provided a nice tartness without being too overpowering. I love how there were 2 types of onions — the charred and raw red onions gave the burger an extra edge over competitors. The different textures, and sweetness from the charred onions complemented the entire burger very well. The house-made potato buns, which were light and fluffy, were nicely toasted.

I also had the Cheeseburger ($15), and topped up $4.90 for the combo that came with their house-made Golden Lime Slushie and Truffle Fries(additional $2.50). The Cheeseburger is essentially the Butterburger, without butter and cheddar, and accompanied by their OFC special sauce which was smoky and flavourful. I was a little disappointed by the truffle fries though — the truffle flavours were not very robust. Unlike classic milkshakes, their Golden Lime Slushie was a refreshing accompaniment to the very rich burgers.

The biggest con would be that they have a rather small dining space, with only about 8 standard tables, and 5 high chairs. Queues start to form when the store opens, and continue to extend over the course of lunch hour. Be sure to come early, or catch them during off-peak hours. I would say forget the fries, but they do serve a darn good burger.
