As a child, I have many fond memories of buying otah. On the way home from school, I would pass by a man barbecuing otak on the roadside. I still remember THAT aroma wafting towards me. From then on, otah otah has always had a special place in my heart and stomach. When I heard of Otak Otak Kampung and their unique Indonesian-style Otak, I just had to head down to Geylang Serai Market to try it out!

Otak Otak Kampung has been in operation since the 1950s, and is now in the hands of second generation hawkers. The stall specialises in otak otak ($0.8 each), which they claim to be a more traditional kampong-style otak. The otak otak’s main ingredient is serundeng (grated coconut flakes), which bring a unique, flaky texture and sweetness to the otak.

I was greeted by the fresh fragrance of the serundeng on my first bite! The grated coconut had been fried with a mix of spices, with the taste of lemongrass coming through prominently. The spiciness balanced out the natural sweetness of the coconut, and I love that there were fresh chunks of fish found throughout the otak. The otak is wrapped in banana leaves before being grilled, imparting a slight smokiness to the dish that simply works. Such a unique and tasty otak! I might have a hard time going back to normal otak!

For something even more unique, check out the Pulut Panggang ($0.7 each)! Here, the same delicious coconut flake mix is packed within delicious packets of glutinous rice and grilled. The glutinous rice was chewy, while not being tough, giving this snack a great texture. The rice also acted as the perfect canvas for the flavoursome coconut mix inside, which was packed full of spiciness and sweetness! The coconut flakes were slightly coarser than the one in the otah mix.

If Otak holds a special place in your heart like it does for me, then Otak Otak Kampung in Geylang Serai Market and Food Centre is somewhere that you absolutely have to check out! The only downside is that you might like these otak so much that you wont want any other otak anymore!
