Scores of taxi drivers have praised Raimah Eating House as a food galore. Their western food, in particular, will always be raved about whenever I am in a Taxi (or Grab) asking for food recommendations. “You must try the steak, it’s power la” or “the nasi goreng is shiok” are common sentiments associated with this place. Getting to Raimah Eating House is a breeze, especially since it is just located behind Kembangan MRT. First timers will be met with a row of shops, but Seafood Western is the particular store you should be gunning for. Like its name suggests, the stall commands an impressive menu of western cuisine options that are certified halal.

Amongst the dishes, the Nasi Goreng Butter Chicken ($7) has been consistently hailed as a must–try! Unfortunately, as delicious as its name was, its execution was lacklustre. When the words “butter chicken” came to mind, I half expected the chicken to be covered in a rich and flavourful sauce, but what came instead was few pieces of dry meat that was mediocre. Flavour–wise, I could discern a faint curry–like aroma, probably from the curry leaves, as well as a bit of spice from the chilli padi. Other than that, there wasn’t much depth to the chicken. Accompanying the chicken was a generous portion of homemade fried rice, which was pretty tasty. The grains were fried nicely, achieving a mouthfeel that was neither too oily nor dry. A touch of wok hei would have created wonders for the dish.

The Bullet Pepper Steak ($13) was a stellar recommendation. For that price, you get a whole steak covered in a brown and peppery sauce. You’ll find broccoli, mash potato, corn bits and carrot slices on the side as well. Though the beef was done well, the bite on it was pleasantly chewy yet tender. Count on the sauce to deliver an enjoyable dose of sweet and peppery flavours to the steak. The lovely mashed potatoes came slightly chilled with underlying herbaceous flavours that were toothsome. This definitely made for the perfect side dish.

Come to Raimah Eating House if you desire a taste of halal western delights that will please the palate. There are a couple of hits and misses but I would definitely come back to savour the rest of the menu. Drop by in the afternoon for lunch if you can – it offers diners a peace of mind with the non–peak crowd as well.
