There are many coffee stalls in a hawker centre, usually, but have you seen a stall with a long snaking queue when there are many other coffee stalls around? I almost gave up hope featuring Rui Xing Coffee Stall (瑞兴咖啡茶室) because they are always sold out by 10am. Even though my in-laws are just staying opposite the food centre, by the time I make my way to the hawker centre, it is probably time for lunch. But, on a rare Saturday morning, I agreed to meet my fitness kakis for an early breakfast at Rui Xing before our workout.

The stall is run by middle-aged siblings and the uncle who makes the coffee is really swift in his actions.

I am a big kopi fan but I find that many of the coffee stalls serve pretty mediocre coffee. Some are too acidic while others are just too thin. Hence, it’s not difficult to understand why the queue is always so long. Rui Xing’s coffee is aromatic and packs a punch. A cup of coffee here is enough to keep you awake because it is so thick and smooth (there is no need to order kopi-gao here). Every cup has the right sweetness and a mild smokiness. You can also buy the coffee powder from them.

I ordered kaya toast and half boiled eggs to go along with my coffee. Nothing much to shout about except that they use traditional white bread. I like to dip the bread into my coffee. For my friends, they like to either pair it with you tiao or chee cheong fun, which can be easily procured in the hawker centre. We sat right in front of the stall to enjoy our coffee while watching the queue. By about 10am, the aunty will walk to the unlucky ones and say, “No more.” So remember to get there early to avoid disappointment!
