About 50 years ago, in one of America’s most culturally rich city — New Orleans, a single working mother, Ruth Fertel, mortgaged her home to buy a neighbourhood restaurant called Chris Steak House. Ruth has a dream to become a successful owner. And she fulfilled her dream.
Today, most New Orleanians will still go to Ruth’s Chris Steak House for succulent sizzling steaks. And this brand has extended well beyond its shore, opening its first restaurant in Southeast Asia in Singapore this August.
Dinner started with Sizzlin’ Blue Crab Cakes ($35) which is perfectly crisp and wonderfully seasoned. Jumbo lump crab cakes came with sizzling lemon butter wrapped in a cloth to prevent the seeds from falling into the crab cakes. The cakes are rich and not dry, you can taste the crab meat every mouthful.
Ruth’s Chop Salad ($23) is Ruth’s Chris’s original creation. Julienne iceberg lettuce, baby spinach and radicchio are tossed with red onions, mushrooms, green olives, bacon, eggs, hearts of palm, croutons, bleu cheese, lemon basil dressing and the topped with crispy onions.
Ruth’s Chris Steak House serves custom-aged USDA Prime and Australian Wagyu steaks. All U.S. sourced steak is selected from the top 2% of America’s exceptional beef served sizzling hot.
The Ribeye (12 ounce $85, 16 ounce $120) is an outstanding example of USDA Prime at its best. The steak is well marbled for peak flavour and deliciously juicy. To fully savor the quality of the steak, no sauce is added.
Ruth’s Chris takes pride in proprietary cooking methods, for example, the trademarked 982 degree celsius oven that Ruth Fertel helped to develop nearly 50 years ago. Each plate is served on a plate heated to 260 degree celsius to ensure the steak stays “sizzling” hot.
Its Filet (11 ounce $95) serves the most tender cut of corn-fed premium USDA beef. If you want a smaller portion, opt for Petite Filet (8 ounce $85).
Complement your steak with Sautéed mushrooms ($20) which were big and juicy.
And there was Lyonnaise ($20) with was potatoes sauteed with onions.
Another highlight here is the New Orleans Cheesecake ($25) with sweet and sour cream on top, very creamy! The house Cheesecake is to die for, the perfect end to that perfect evening. It is big enough to be shared among friends. I think I can buy this for my friend’s birthday!
Ruth worked and lived by the mantra, “Do what you love, love what you do and you’ll never work another day in your life.” I guess her drive leads to the success of Ruth’s Chris Steak House.
