Berseh Food Centre has always been a bit of a puzzling maze when it comes to finding specific stalls based on their unit numbers, so it took a bit of wandering around in the lower level of the hawker centre before arriving at my destination. Tucked away in a corner towards the back, Salai M’an is the place to go to for Muslim-friendly burgers, smoked meats and hot dogs.

Sulaiman Kausat, the man behind the grill had served as the head chef for burger joint Three Buns Quayside and was the sous chef for Caribbean restaurant Lime House prior to that. Jovial and a chef who obviously loves his work and family, he was joined that day by his youngest son who served as the cutest little aide and an aspiring chef-to-be!

As a huge fan of burgers himself, Sulaiman’s menu offers ten whopping choices such as beef-centric Rendang Kampong ($8) and Black Beauty ($8.90), Classic Cheezy ($7.90), Salai B. Bacon ($7.90) and Fish Alive ($7). Smoked meats include Salai Brisket ($12.90), Salai Ribeye ($13.90) and Salai Lamb Chop ($13.90), all of which come with a choice of two sides.

If you’ve noticed that the prices here differ from what’s stated on the menu, that’s due to the increase in prices of ingredients (and pretty much everything else) so all items on the menu cost $1 more.

Unfortunately, I was told that day that the burgers wouldn’t be available until after 3pm, which was a shame. Nevertheless, the other menu items are definitely worth trying so let’s just dive right in.

Sulaiman spoke about the Salai Jerk Chix ($9.90), one of the best-selling items on the menu, with a lot of pride. Marinated for at least 24 hours in their in-house jerk sauce – a Jamaican blend of spices – and topped with what tasted like BBQ sauce, the chicken was very tender and gave off a wonderfully smoky fragrance that was further enhanced by the sauce.

For sides, we had the chef’s choice which saw a sweet yet refreshing and savoury chilli beef salsa atop crispy fries, as well as coleslaw that added a crunchy textural element to the meal.

I also decided to give the Mexicana Hot Dog ($7.90) a go and was presented with a super zhng-ed up hot dog completely slathered in spicy mayo, tomato salsa and melted cheddar.

The mix of tanginess, creaminess and refreshing zing from the accompanying ingredients made the springy chicken hotdog even yummier, even more so when you take the soft, buttered brioche bun into account.

Salai M’an choice of ingredients and robust flavours were no doubt on point and I’d definitely be back again for the Salai Jerk Chix and 100% to try out the burgers that I missed out on!
