Having grown up in the Katong area, I used to frequent the Old Airport Road Food Centre. However, I have never taken notice of this Nasi Briyani stall situated in a corner of the food centre. When we heard that there was this stall selling Nasi Briyani at $3.50 per plate, we knew we had to try it.

When we arrived at about 11.30am, there was already quite a queue. Selera Rasa has been around for three decades. It really makes me wonder how on earth I could have missed out on this stall all these years! They offer their Nasi Briyani in three variations: Mutton, Chicken and Fish.

Being a great fan of chicken, I had to try the Chicken Nasi Briyani first! While in the queue, I saw that patrons were adding on side dishes. I decided to add on the fried fish ($2) to my Chicken Nasi Briyani. The spiced rice was fragrant and went well with the gravy that came along with it. The chicken was soft and tender, and came off the bone really easily. The curry taste was rather light and had a very slight tinge of spiciness to it. The fried fish was soft, but it was a tad oily for my liking.

Next up, we went for the Mutton Nasi Briyani. Just as we were about to make our order, we saw a fresh batch of Deep Fried Chicken ($2.50) being dished out. We couldn’t help but order it too. I am usually not too fond of mutton because of the gamey taste. However, I was pleasantly surprised that their rendition was actually not too bad. You can easily chew on the meat, and it is cooked in a slightly spicier sauce that tasted like rendang.

What really blew us away was the Fried Chicken! It was really well marinated, and fried to perfection. We tried to ask the owners what was in the marinade with much enthusiasm, but was told that it was their family’s secret recipe. Nevertheless, it was really good and definitely made our wait worthwhile! The skin was very crispy and it had this slightly salty aftertaste. So good!

Selera Rasa only prepares a certain amount of meat each day, and will close for the day once they run out. Be sure to head down early, and be ready to wait in the queue for abit! And don’t forget to add a piece of fried chicken to your meal!
