I have been writing too much restaurant reviews lately that some readers dropped me a friendly note saying they miss my hawker posts. The Hungry Cow was asking me to share my soft diet as it may be interesting. I told him that I have been rather strict with my diet, eating pork / fish porridge almost every meal for the whole week.
However, the boy did give me some small treats by bringing me to Seng Bee Hainanese Chicken Rice and Xin Mei Congee for lunch last Saturday. Having stayed in Ang Mo Kio for almost 3 decades, I have never ate at Seng Bee Hainanese Chicken Rice and Xin Mei Congee before. After they were featured in the Mediacorp TV food program “Where The Queue Starts”, this particular chicken rice stall at Blk 724 Ang Mo Kio Food Centre is ALWAYS long queue (i am very lazy to queue).
So we had a plate of chicken rice that day, for the first time. It was already 2pm, so the queue was not that long. The rice was ordinary, but the chicken was tender and soft enough for me (haha!) with generous amount of soy gravy drizzled on top. The chilli sauce goes well with the chicken, not to spicy, and they even have ginger paste.
They have another chicken rice outlet in Blk 338 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 #01-1639 with lesser queue. So if you don’t want to wait, you can buy your chicken rice from there. We ordered chicken feet ($3) too, but portion was very small for that price. I heard their crispy tofu is good, I shall try it next time.

Well, majority of what goes down to my stomach that day was non other than the pork porridge (again!). Xin Mei Congee does Cantonese-Style Congee. It has been nominated as champion in City Hawker “Best 10 Congee” contest which is organzised by Shin Min Daily News and City Gas.
The congee is cooked in superior stock, lovingly brewed for more than four hours with ingredients such as pig and fish bones. After eating congee for a week, I think the congee here is very smooth and tasty. It definitely goes well with hot crispy dough fritters.

The chicken rice stall and congee stall is just next to each other. And they also have Seng Bee dessert stall!
