Tucked away in a HDB estate in Ang Mo Kio is Shinjitsu Ramen, which serves up bowls of ramen at accessible prices. Arguably one of, if not the cheapest ramen in Singapore, the cheapest bowl of ramen here goes for only $5.90. That does not mean that they skimp on the ingredients or produce substandard fare. In fact, the gyozas here are made by hand, and the broth is cooked for long hours.

The star of the show was their Clear Chicken Broth Ramen ($5.90) which came with a large drumstick! For its price, I did not have high expectations for the texture of the chicken, but it was deliciously fork-tender with a nice char on the outside, and succulent meat on the inside. I did, however, feel that the noodles were on the softer side, but that’s just a personal preference. The soup was light and clean, yet tasty, perfect for when you want to have something light but yummy.

Another ramen classic, their Tonkotsu Ramen ($6.90) is topped with 3 slices of Pork Chashu. The collagen-rich broth left a sticky residue on my lips. While the broth was rich and flavourful, the meat was lacking in the taste department, and was rather tough. Overall, nothing to shout about.

While I was waiting for my ramen, I was pleasantly surprised to see the chef wrapping the gyozas, and could not pass up ordering a portion for myself. The Pork Gyoza ($6) had hints of ginger, and crunchy elements within. At $1 a piece, they seem to be on the pricier side but I do find them quite worth every penny.

All in all, the portions of the ramen were generous for their prices — there was a rather large portion of noodles, and quite a substantial amount of liao. My only gripe would be that the black fungus served with my ramen wasn’t crunchy.

Value-for-money, delicious, and generous in portion, the Clear Chicken Broth Ramen is a dish that I will return for!
