Growing up in a Hainanese household, I’ve had my fair share of chicken rice in the form of irresistible savoury spheres. But I’ve never tried fried versions of it till now!

Popular 20-year-old chicken rice restaurant Sing Swee Kee has recently opened a new outlet in Koufu at Toa Payoh HDB Hub. Well-loved for its succulent Hainanese chicken and fragrant rice, the outlet is doling out bite-sized fried chicken rice balls at the new outlet.

Each chicken rice ball is rolled by hand, and the quality checked and ensured. Hence, patrons can only get their rice balls a little later during the day, and not right when the stall opens.

When I arrived, there was already a long queue ahead of me. Luckily, the rice balls were available at about 11.30am.

I’m always up for fried food, so tucking into the Bite-Size Crunchy Chicken Rice Ball (3pc) ($2.50) was heaven to me! The size of each fried chicken rice ball is comparable to a golf ball. The orbs were deep-fried to a golden-brown, and I was surprised that the fragrant rice within was still moist and fluffy. It’s an excellent appetiser to munch on before you dig into the mains.

Next, I tried the Chicken Rice with Traditional Rice Ball (White) ($4.90), which comes with a bowl of clear soup. Despite the slices of poached chicken being thin and small, the meat was tender and juicy. The traditional rice ball is larger than the fried version, almost equivalent to the size of a baseball. The rice was firm and fragrant with the right amount of greasiness.

Although the stall didn’t carry the signature green ginger when I visited, the hand-pounded chilli and dark soy sauce mix delivered a satisfying kick to the taste buds when added to the chicken rice.

Lastly, I had the Single Set W Braised Egg & Veg (Roasted/$5.90), which comes with a bowl of clear soup. The roasted chicken slices were also juicy and packed with flavour, and went hand in hand with the creamy egg. My only gripe was that the meat slices were thinner than expected.

If you’re planning on heading over, don’t miss the current promotion where customers stand to receive a free fried chicken rice ball with every $5 spent at both Sing Swee Kee outlets(between 1 – 15 November)!

Be prepared to go early as the fried balls are limited to one per customer for the first 100 customers each day.
