Spice N Rice Re-edited-10

Bringing something new to the food scene at Amoy Street Food Centre is Spice & Rice, an up-and-coming Nasi Lemak stall started by two young bankers.

Diners can choose from several types of meat, including classic fried chicken, butter chicken, and rotating specials such as beef rendang. All bowls come with a sunny-side up, pineapple cubes, cucumber slices, chilli paste, and of course, ikan bilis and peanuts.

So first up, we gave their classic fried chicken a try. The tenderness of the meat became apparent as soon as I dug my spoon into the flesh of the drumstick. The meat could be torn off the bone easily. The chicken skin was fried to a perfect crisp, and every bite was seriously good.

While the chicken had a wonderful texture, it was not as flavourful as I had hoped.  This isn’t necessarily a bad thing — the milder flavours, low grease level, and signature “No MSG” trait will appeal to the health conscious.

For those who want something slightly more sinful than the classic fried chicken, go for the butter chicken. Flavour is the name of the game as the delectable chicken cubes are soaked in a thick gravy that had a very slight sweetness.

Traditional white coconut rice is swapped for an amazingly fluffy basmati coconut rice in this bowl. The ensemble left an impression on me, as it felt like a cross between nasi lemak and nasi biryani.

I like the yolk on my sunny-side ups to be as runny as possible so that I can spill it onto my rice, and I’m delighted that the yolk was just how I like it.

Both the classic fried chicken (2 pieces) and butter chicken are priced at $7.90, while the beef rendang, being a rotating special, is a tad more expensive at $9.90. The vegetarian curry is cheaper at $5.90. These can be seen as slightly hefty prices to some as it is, after all, a hawker stall.

Overall, Spice & Rice brings a fresh take on a dish that we already know all too well. The dishes can even serve as a “healthier choice” in comparison to some of the more greasy hawker food. But if you’re looking for something strongly flavoursome, this probably isn’t what you’re looking for.
