While there are more retro American style diners popping up, there is something special about Steeple’s Deli — the first deli in Singapore. The wooden features and warm lighting transport you to those charming generations-old delis in America.

The fact that Steeple’s Deli has been around since 1981, and has been standing tall for 41 years (and hopefully counting!) is testament to their popularity. The quality of their offerings, and the allure of their space, keep loyal patrons coming back for more. Steeple’s Deli is a family-owned and operated business, spanning across 3 generations.

Instead of your usual physical menus, or even QR code ones, the deli uses a green chalkboard that features a handwritten menu of their sandwiches, burgers and drinks. I love the open kitchen concept. All of my senses were piqued as I watched the good folks hard at work. The open kitchen also facilitates conversations with the family running the show. They are very friendly and always up for a warm chat (if they aren’t too busy!)

Steeple’s Deli claims to be the home of the Reuben ($17.90), so of course I had to order their signature! Sandwiched between toasted sourdough were a generous serving of corned beef, and a portion of crunchy sauerkraut which balanced out the saltiness of the beef. I can see why this is one of Steeple’s signatures!

Another one of their signatures, the Steeple’s Burger ($21.90) was a lavish affair. Apart from the usual suspects, it was also stuffed with caramelised bacon, a hearty patty, and a sunny side up. The patty was perfect – charred on the outside, but still pink in the middle. And, the fluffy brioche bun was nicely toasted. My only gripe would be that the fried egg could have had a more runny yolk, but that’s just my preference.

To go with, I had their Vanilla Milkshake ($8.90). The creamy goodness had just the right consistency, and was not too rich, nor overly jelak.

Sadly, Tanglin Shopping Centre, where they are located, is currently in the en bloc process. They will be moving out in a year’s time; so come down with your friends and family to their charming shop for an unforgettable dining experience while you still can!
