With its eclectic collection of independent fashion boutiques, bars and restaurants, Haji Lane has always been a hit with tourists and Singaporeans alike. If you’ve paid a visit to this vibrant shophouse-laden street recently, you might have noticed a new eatery. Opened just a month ago, Street Submarine is a Halal-certified eatery that serves up a wide variety of local-inspired submarine sandwiches!

Street Submarine has a range of ‘subs’ on its menu. Each sub features a succulent chicken sausage atop a buttery toasted bun. They have a tantalising selection of toppings, ranging from local classics such as Chilli Rendang, to premium ingredients such as lobster!

Street Submarine Spicy Chicken Sub

I first tried their Spicy Chicken Sub ($8), which is one of the more popular items. This sub features chunks of spicy chicken thigh that are generously coated with mayonnaise and sweet chilli sauce. Honestly, I initially felt that $8 was quite a high price to pay for what seemed like an overly-hyped hot dog. But boy, was I wrong!

A lot of effort goes into the preparation of the chicken — Street Submarine marinates it overnight in their own blend of spices. The extra work really pays off as the meat was incredibly tender and juicy, with just the right amount of spicy kick. A bite of this delectable creation was oh-so satisfying! The mayo bound all the ingredients together, while the chilli sauce added a lovely hit of sweetness and tanginess. Thankfully, the gratuitous bits of lettuce in the fluffy toasted bun were completely justified. They added a bit of crunch, which was a refreshing touch!

Beef rendang is a warm and hearty dish that’s loved by Singaporeans. So why not put it on a sandwich? Their Chilli Rendang Sub ($8) features beef that’s patiently stewed with a blend of spices for a few hours. It seems like they have tweaked their rendang recipe to mimic the American-version of ‘chilli’. It’s a lot milder in terms of flavour and spice, and it uses minced beef instead of beef chunks. Unfortunately, I felt that the rendang chilli was too much of a departure from the original version. It’s a solid concept, but I felt that it could’ve been punchier and more robust in terms of flavour. If I were to visit again, I’d try their Spicy Pulled Beef Sub ($9) instead. Apparently, it’s stewed for a whopping six hours!

Street Submarine Milo Ice Kepal (Landscape)

I was scratching my head when I first heard of their Milo Ice Kepal ($5) before I did a quick Google search. For those who are ignorant, like I was, this has recently become an immensely popular dessert in Malaysia. This dish is essentially a shaved ice ball drenched with a luscious milo syrup. Street Submarine is one of the first places in Singapore to offer this dessert! They offer a variety of toppings for the Milo Ice Kepal. I got mine topped with milo powder and fruity pebbles.

You’ll love this if you have a sweet tooth. The thick milo concoction is made with milo, condensed milk, evaporated milk and sugar syrup. Sadly, the shaved ice started to clump together as I was eating it, so it was kind of hard to eat with the provided plastic spoon. If you like Milo Dinosaur, then the milo powder topping is a must. The colourful fruity pebbles also added a pleasant crunch, and also made the dessert more aesthetically pleasing. They also have a Horlicks version. If you can’t decide, Street Submarine has an Ice Kepal Michael Jackson ($8) — this got a laugh out of me.

Street Submarine Drinks

Street Submarine Thai Milk Tea

Street Submarine serves its drinks in big plastic pouches, which is quite novel. This is probably a nod to how our kopi or teh is normally served in hawker centres. Their Thai Milk Tea ($6) is freshly brewed in-house using Thai tea leaves. It’s definitely on the pricier side, but it’s a decent pouch (?) of Thai Milk Tea nonetheless! I also tried their Melon Fizzy Drink ($5), which is basically soda mixed with a melon-flavoured syrup. This ice-cold and refreshing drink is a perfect treat on a hot day.

There’s no denying that Street Submarine’s dishes are pricey, but this is to be expected given its location.
