I’ve lost count of the number of days I’ve spent wistfully reminiscing about eating my way through the day in Malaysia and I know I’m not the only one. And that goes tenfold for the Malaysians stuck in Singapore. At the very least, the little bit of comfort I can offer is introducing a place where you can find authentic Penang Assam laksa for a taste of home.

Keep a lookout for a brightly lit stall called Super Star Original Famous Penang Laksa (it’s also halal-certified) located towards the back of People’s Park Food Centre. You’ll be warmly welcomed by the very friendly Ms Pat, the chatty lady boss of this acclaimed Penang laksa stall. Service was brisk as she whizzed through orders coming in from both her storefront and delivery platforms like FoodPanda and Deliveroo.

Even then, she skilfully multitasked between assembling steaming bowls of laksa and chatting with me about the history of Penang laksa and her journey when it came to perfecting her recipe. Ms Pat was born and raised in the northern part of Malaysia, and her upbringing definitely had an impact on her laksa. You can tell that she is very proud of it and judging from the smell wafting over from the vats of broth in the kitchen, it’s no surprise at all. Bottom line: I couldn’t wait to dig in.

The Kampung Penang Assam Laksa ($7.50) came generously topped with a mountain of ingredients such as ikan kembung (chub mackerel), sliced cucumbers, onions, fresh mint leaves, pineapple chunks, green chilli and finely-sliced bunga kantan (torch ginger flowers). I almost couldn’t see the noodles beneath!

The slippery rice noodles were imported directly from Penang and had a very springy texture, with a nice bite. They went really well with the broth and I could finish the entire bowl without feeling sick of it.

Oh, and the soup was so good. Although I would have liked a bit more of a spicy kick to it, the tangy broth will leave you addicted. Every slurp exuded a bounty of flavours from the assam (tamarind) and additional pineapple juice. I was also glad that it wasn’t overly fishy. Ms Pat also told me that her laksa will taste good whether it’s hot or cold, so that took a little pressure off of me when I was snapping photos.

While I originally came here for the assam laksa, I saw that she also sells cockles ($8 for 500g, $10 for 700g). Seeing that almost half her customers came solely for the hum, of course I had to try it! I’m glad I did cause the cockles were cleaned well and bigger than what you usually get at most places.

But what made these fresh morsels stand out even more was the chilli sauce, which I absolutely fell in love with. The sweetness and spiciness of it hit all the right notes and paired excellently with the cockles. In fact, I’d say it could pair well with almost anything.

The Penang assam laksa here might be a little pricier, but almost everything in the kitchen is freshly handmade and lovingly prepared by Ms Pat everyday. The ingredients also definitely don’t come cheap and with the amount of dedication she puts into every bowl, it’s well worth the price. No wonder many people say it’s one of the best Penang assam laksa in Singapore!
