Bugis always comes to mind when I’m thinking of a place to meet my friends. With a plethora of delicious bites and aesthetically-pleasing cafes, Bugis just seems like quite a great place for a day of cafe-hopping and more. However, most of the time, I find my wallet screaming at the prices. So, imagine my joy when I stumbled upon Supreme Pork Chop Rice which offers value-for-money meals.

Started by a former Taiwanese basketball player and his wife in 1991, Supreme Pork Chop Rice serves tasty Taiwanese-style pork chop rice in a hidden eatery in the basement of a building on Beach Road.

The menu has items such as Pork Chop, Chicken Chop, Fish & Chips, and Chicken Cutlet. You can also change the white rice to fried rice, noodles, fries, or mantou.

I first tried the popular Pork Chop Rice ($4.50) which featured fried pork pieces, a fried egg, coleslaw and a bowl of clear soup. I was surprised at how light the fried exterior was that doesn’t make eating the pork chop so jelak. The stall provides a chilli sauce commonly found in chicken rice stalls which gives the pork chop a tangy sweetness. Since I opted for the fried rice (additional $0.50), the light smokiness of the rice went well with the pork chop. I’d almost liken it to the Din Tai Fung Pork Chop Fried Rice, but with a homier feel in this cosy joint.

Next, I had the Chicken Chop Noodle ($5) which consists of a thick cut of pork chop, luscious gravy, and white flat noodles. Each thick cut of meat was tender and juicy. However, I wished that the gravy was more flavourful as the mushroom sauce was somewhat bland. The flat noodles were al dente and springy, almost like a thin version of ban mian. The stall owner shared that they pair this dish with their special mala chilli sauce which is made with imported Taiwanese ingredients, so as to create a distinctive taste of Taiwan that could rarely be found in Singapore. Despite its intimidating colour, the mala chilli sauce had quite a manageable kick that elevated the chicken chop’s flavours.

If seafood is more to your taste, the stall also sells Fish w Chips ($4.50) which comprises dory fish bites, baked beans, salted fries, and coleslaw. The batter coating the fish was light and had a mix of sesame seeds in it for an added fragrance. The flesh of the fish was slightly firm. My only gripe would be that the fries were overly salted.

Lastly, the stall sells a Taiwanese soup staple, Gong Wan Soup ($4). The soup features 5 meatballs which the stall owners spent a year perfecting. The R&D was definitely worth it as each ball was filled with succulent minced meat and had a slight bounciness when bitten into.

So, if you want to do a Taiwanese food crawl on a budget, Supreme Pork Chop Rice is a hidden gem you won’t want to miss out on!
