My makan kakis have been raving about Sweet Bistro and I finally made a trip down. The hawker stall has an extensive selection of baked goods such as muffins, yam cake, pumpkin cake, kuehs and more. But if you are observant enough, you will notice a handwritten sign in the corner which says “Penang Fried Kway Teow 11am to 3pm”.

Penang fried kway teow in a hawker bakery stall? I was a little confused on my first visit. Is it going to be legit? Turns out that their Penang fried kway teow is probably one of the best I have tasted in Singapore.

Owner Benz Tan used to work in Conrad Hotel before opening this hawker stall about a decade ago. I thought he specialises in baking but he said, “I work in a buffet restaurant, so I cook everything!”

At Sweet Bistro, every plate of fried kway teow is cooked upon order. My fried kway teow was served to me piping hot and fresh off the wok. It’s savoury, full-bodied, and laced with wok hei. His homemade chilli sauce liven up the dish which was sprinkled with sinful yet delish lard crisps.

Each plate of fried kway teow comes with lup cheong, bean sprouts and big juicy prawns. I liked that it was not too greasy, and each bite gave a delightful burst of savouriness, smokiness, and spice. It’s so different from the wetter, sweeter Singaporean-style fried kway teow.

Another item you should try is the Shao Bao— sweet and savoury char siew filling is enclosed in a buttery pastry and baked to perfection. His classic yam cake and pumpkin cake are very popular too. They will start baking pineapple tarts one month before Chinese New Year, hence fried kway teow may not be available then.

Was this plate of Fried Kway Teow worth every single calorie? Absolutely yes. I thoroughly enjoyed every single spoonful, and I can see myself coming back here for this. Definitely a spot worth checking out!
