Tasty Sarawak Kolo Mee – Generous Bowls of Sarawak Kolo Mee and Laksa Hidden in Bukit Batok

Bukit Batok has always been home to many hidden gems that’s mostly privy to residents in the area and Tasty Sarawak Kolo Mee seems to be one of them. There used to be another outlet in Toa Payoh that has since closed but at least the one in the west is still thriving, especially come lunchtime. A number of Sarawakians have personally given their stamps of approval so, of course, we had to come and try the food out for ourselves.

The headlining Sarawak Kolo Mee ($4/5) comes with three choices of sauce: red which falls on the sweeter side, black which gives the noodles a more savoury boost, and white. That’s not all; their menu offers choices such as Mushroom Chicken Feet Kolo Mee ($4/5), Minced Meat Kolo Mee ($4/5) and Fishball Soup ($3.50/4.50) as well.

I decided to opt for the black sauce for my Sarawak Kolo Mee and my bowl of springy noodles came heaped with a generous amount of minced meat, slices of char siew and a sprinkle of green onions. Help yourself to as much pork lard as you fancy from the container on the counter, along with the chilli sauces.

Give everything in the bowl a good toss and slurp up the deliciously chewy noods. They weren’t too salty, and were quite fragrant. The minced meat was well-cooked and seasoned perfectly with a blend of sweet and savoury flavours that went nicely with the noodles. Fairly generous in number, the char siew slices also had a distinct sweetness and weren’t too dry.

My only gripe would be the pork lard which, while slightly crunchy, had an obvious bitterness to it. It could be because it had been left outside for quite some time and soaked in oil but you can always skip it since you’re meant to help yourself!

An item that’s often sold out during the lunch rush, the Sarawak Laksa ($5/6) certainly painted an appetising picture with its orange broth and large, plump-looking prawns.

Unfortunately, it didn’t quite meet the mark for me as the laksa broth tasted a lot like the kind you’d find in curry maggi mee. There was also a distinct taste of coriander that had seeped into the broth. An additional squeeze of lime added a small hit of tanginess, while the sambal chilli released a wave of hae bee hiam, which jazzed up the dish a little.

The shredded chicken was also, sadly, rather dry but at least the prawns were big and crunchy.

Out of all the dishes, my favourite was unexpectedly the Meatball Soup ($3.50/4.50). The broth was pleasantly flavourful and full-bodied in taste yet clear and refreshing for the palate. Nine meatballs were bobbing in the piping hot soup and each one of them was well-seasoned to a  fault that brought out its yummy, meaty flavours.

I can’t see myself making the long journey to Tasty Sarawak Kolo Mee in the far west, but if I were in the area, I would pop by for the Sarawak Kolo Mee and Meatball Soup!
