I love curry puffs as much as any Singaporean, and Singaporeans’ love for this snack is evident in the sheer number of curry puff stalls on our small island.

As I was strolling through the lively neighbourhood of Potong Pasir, I stumbled upon The Baba Curry Puff Cafe which had constant streams of patrons queuing up. I was surprised at the number of customers despite the stall being remotely tucked away behind the main shopping street.

The Baba Curry Puff Cafe has been dishing out freshly made fried treats to the residents of Potong Pasir over the past 8 years. The owners are an elderly couple who previously worked in print advertising. As the wife loves pastries, the husband-wife duo decided to try their hand at making curry puffs and have opened a stall here in Potong Pasir ever since.

According to the owner, they make their dough by hand and can only make about a maximum of 200 curry puffs a day. When it was finally my turn to place an order, I noticed that most of the curry puffs were already snagged up by eager customers before me.

I decided to try their two of their popular curry puff flavours and a popular item, the banana fritters.

First up, I tried the Chicken Curry Puff ($1.30) that’s generously stuffed with chunks of chicken, potatoes and a wedge of egg. The puff was crisp and flaky, but thankfully didn’t shatter or crumble as I bit into it. The curry was slightly spicy, and it was actually pretty filling.

Although the classic chicken curry puff is usually the star at all curry puff stalls, The Baba Curry Puff Cafe’s Sardine curry puff ($1.30) stole the show. The moist sardine packed a light heat and tasted really good with the crisp skin. The winning combination had me finishing the puff in one go, in seconds.

For “dessert”, I went with the banana fritters ($0.80) from the fried snacks section. I was surprised that the banana filling retained its creaminess even after deep frying. The batter was light and thin, so I didn’t feel too guilty indulging in this.

As I said my goodbyes to the cheery owner, another stream of customers came to chat with him.

If you’re craving for some good curry puffs, be sure to visit The Baba Curry Puff Cafe early! Else, you’ll be left disappointed by a limited selection.
