The Chop House – Singapore’s First Self Tap Beer Gastro-Bar
The Chop House, created by the same good people who brought the successful Wooloomooloo Steakhouse to Singapore, is an exciting new gastro-bar located at VivoCity that showcases classic favourites with creative flair as well as a wide range of beers on tap and bottled craft brews.
Opened about 2 months ago, The Chop House is also the first in Singapore and Asia to feature a state-of-the-art SelfTap Beer concept from USA and a uniquely designed cold keg room for its drafts.
With equal importance and emphasis on beers and food, The Chop House offers both indoor and waterfront dining options. The inviting ambience comes in the way of wood finishing, down lights and ceiling fans.
The menu at The Chop House showcases a range of classic western favourites executed with flair and fun. We started our lunch with some Sweet Potato Fries ($6) which were delightfully crunchy and sweet.
Quesadillas (choice of chicken or beef, $15) at The Chop House deserves mention as a must-have light bite. Perfectly grilled tortilla shells are filled with a choice of minced chicken or beef, melted Jack cheddar and served with sour cream, homemade salsa and guacamole.
The Chop House has a noteworthy selection of handmade burgers. There are five to choose from and these run the gamut from beef, chicken and pork burgers. I gave the hearty Chop House Pork Burger ($22) full marks for presentation and taste. The thick minced pork patty flavoured with ginger, chilli and coriander is served with applewood smoked bacon and pickles.
My favourite is definitely the Berkshire Pork Chop ($32). Marinated with a Mongolian glaze of hoisin and black bean chilli sauce, the pork chop tasted somewhat similar to western style char siew. The caramelised edges of the grilled chop complement the full flavoured meat perfectly. This is served with a twice-baked potato and fresh watercress.
The Chop House also serves up a collection of premium beef dishes that match top steakhouses in quality and unbeatable prices. Slice into a 200g USDA Prime Ribeye ($36) or any of the other great cuts such as tenderloin, sirloin and T-bone steaks from Australia and New Zealand.
For non beef lovers, how about a Mixed Grill Seafood Platter ($42 for two) for sharing? The platter comprises juicy prawns, salmon, sotong and grilled tomatoes on a hot platter.
The Chop House is the first in Singapore and Asia to utilise a specially-designed tap system that keeps the supply at an ideal temperature for optimum enjoyment. The brews are dispensed from a special cold keg room where copper pipes are run straight to the SIX taps at the bar. This system keeps beers chilled at a constant one degree Celsius from keg to glass. Special sensors detect when a keg is almost empty and automatically switches to a new one, thus eliminating the need for customers to wait as the bartender changes kegs from under the bar.
Tapping on this system, the Chop House is also the first in this region to introduce SelfTap stations. A total of five taps are located in and around the gastro-bar where customers are able to pull pints at their leisure. The attractiveness of this is that customers are charged by the millilitres instead of by the pint and depending on what part of the day it is utilised; prices are based on regular or happy hour charges. The two drafts hooked up to the SelfTaps are Mac’s Great White Cloudy Wheat Beer (New Zealand) and Pure Blonde Premium Lager (Australia).
You will be spoilt for choice by several boutique brews on tap and bottled craft beers from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Belgium. There are 6 beers on tap, namely Schneider Wiesse Tap 7 (Germany), Weihenstephan Original Lager (Germany), Mac’s Great White Cloudy Wheat Beer (NZ), Pure Blonde Premium Lager (Australia), Stellar Artois Lager (Belgium), Kronenberg Lager (France). There are also 15 cocktails for you to choose from.
You have an option of alfresco dining at long tables flanked by wooden benches, dining tables and chairs or high tables. Enjoy some cold pints of beer whilst taking in the gorgeous waterfront view.
