The Bukit Batok neighbourhood is one of the best places for an early morning hike — think Bukit Batok Nature Park and the trek to Little Guilin. What makes it even better is the number of breakfast options around to refuel your energy. For me, nothing beats hunkering down with an umami-laden plate of Hokkien mee and my latest find, The NeighbourWok, didn’t disappoint.

Most Hokkien mee stalls around usually stick to wok-fried dishes such as carrot cake and char kway teow alongside Hokkien mee, so I was a bit surprised to see that the other item on their menu was satay ($0.70 for chicken/pork, $0.80 for mutton). I later learnt that it was influenced by Kelvin Teo’s (the boss) elderly father, who used to run his own satay stall back in the day.

After placing my order and getting summoned by a buzzer when it was ready, I was all ready to dig into this aromatic plate of Hokkien mee ($4/5). The generous portion of noodles had pork belly bits, sotong and three prawns mixed in before being topped with crunchy pork lard and a dollop of their house-made sambal chilli. A good squeeze of the lime on the side and it was time to makan.

The yellow and white noodles had been well-infused with the stock and while this version of Hokkien mee was on the wet side, it wasn’t too soupy. There was a whisper of wok hei though it would have been nice if it was just a smidge stronger. Even so, it was an addictive dish to gobble up and got even better when mixed with the chilli, which was fairly potent with sour tinges.

Although small in size, the prawns were pretty fresh.

It wasn’t the best Hokkien mee I’ve ever had, but was well-worth the price and quite yummy. I’d definitely be a regular if I lived close by.
