Started by Angela, a former hairdresser, in August this year, The Wrap serves handmade popiahs, kueh pie tee, mee siam, and desserts in a coffee shop in Telok Ayer.

Angela used to be a boutique salon owner in Link Hotel at Tiong Bahru. However, the salon’s lease was released earlier as the hotel was converted into a quarantine facility. Afterwards, she tried her hand at being a freelance hairdresser, but unfortunately, the business didn’t take off. Angela’s love for popiah and her past experience running a popiah stall for three months in 2019 gave her the motivation to set up her current popiah stall.

What stands out about Angela’s popiahs is that they are filled with healthier ingredients . Each wrap is made with olive oil instead of pork lard, and has a multitude of different vegetables such as cabbage, french beans, leek, and carrot in it.

I got the stall’s Signature Poh Piah ($4.50) which features Chinese sausages and different types of vegetables encased in a thin popiah skin. Right off the bat, the popiah was significantly larger that what is commonly served at other stalls. The soft popiah skin was chewy and held the filling in place. The slow-cooked vegetables, diced beancurd, and crispy flour gave the popiah a refreshing crunch, and the dried prawn gave off an addictive savouriness in each bite.

The crunchiness of the fresh prawn and sweetness of Chinese sausage definitely set the popiah apart from what’s in the market. Unlike traditional popiah, which is cut into multiple pieces, Angela’s popiah is presented in halves, so that patrons can enjoy the wrap like a sandwich. She even offers disposable plastic gloves.

I found it endearing that the popiah is housed in a basket that had clips with inspirational quotes written on them. They definitely brightened my day!

Next, I tried the Mee Siam ($4.50), which saw prawns, hard-boiled eggs, and fried beancurd doused in a thick sauce. The noodles were springy, which went well with the crunchy prawns. I found the mee siam sauce to be on the sweeter side. You can get the Mee Siam and Popiah in a set ($8) as well!

Lastly, I had the Kueh Pie Tee ($4.50) made with pork floss and other popiah fillings. The shell was crisp and crunchy, and the mix of vegetables and pork floss was appetising. They also have a special Strawberry Kueh Pie Tee that that I didn’t get to try, as it’s available only on Saturdays!

Overall, I felt that the quality and portion of the popiah and kueh pie tee are worth the $4.50 price tag. The fresh tasty wraps are great for office workers seeking healthier alternatives in the CBD!
