My husband’s friend recommended this stall, Traditional Famous Prawn Mee, which is tucked away in a small neighbourhood coffee shop in Hougang. While queuing for our noodles, I was asking my husband if lor mee or prawn noodles is better. The friendly lady boss, who was taking her break, overheard our conversation and replied, “both also nice!” In the end, we ordered one of each to share.

At Traditional Famous Prawn Mee, the prawn noodle soup had an old-school taste that you are not likely to find these days. The prawns were fresh and sweet and were accompanied by a light briny broth which had just a hint of sweetness that lingered after every mouthful. Each bowl came with a dash of shallot oil, pork slices, and fish cake. Though simple, the prawn noodles were enjoyable. I was later told that the dry version tastes better. I guess I have to make a trip back for it!

I’ll say go for the lor mee, instead of the prawn noodles, if you can only choose one bowl. The lor mee seems like the more popular choice among their customers as well. At just $3, my bowl of lor mee comes with fried fish fillet, a few slices of braised meat and fishcake, as well as half a braised egg. The gravy was not very thick but coated every ingredient quite evenly. With an extra touch of vinegar and sprinkle of minced garlic, the lor mee was delicious, and I finished it very quickly. I like that the fish fillet had a thin jacket of batter and still retained a slight crisp.

During lunchtime, the stall is swamped. The food is usually sold out by 1.30pm, so it is better to head there for breakfast.
