Taking reference from the American Sitcom, 2 Broke Girls, a story of two cash-strapped waitress girls who wanted to start a cupcake shop, are the folks behind Two Broke Guys. Thankfully, the Two Broke Guys are not actually broke, but they still started a little dessert shop in a quaint neighbourhood in Serangoon.

The bakery is a breath of fresh air not only because of their catchy name but also because of the variety of desserts that they offer. Two Broke Guys specialises in burnt cheesecakes, traditional pandan waffles and mini macarons. They also offer a range of brownies, cupcakes, cookies, milkshakes and freshly brewed tea.

As burnt cheesecake is one of the trending desserts now, I decided to get a box of four ($10) of the popular flavours. I couldn’t resist the mini macarons that were calling out for me with their attractive colours and got a box of six ($10.90) of different flavours.

They have an extensive range of burnt cheesecake — from the usual Original and Speculoos to interesting ones like Lychee Rose and Ondeh Ondeh(all priced at $2.80 per piece). I got the Nutella+Oreo Crumbs, Speculoos, Lychee Rose and Ondeh Ondeh cheesecakes. I’ll start with the more familiar flavours.

The Nutella+Oreo Crumbs was a little dry. The Nutella topping overpowers all other flavours from the crumbs and the cheesecake. The crumbs did add some texture to the cake, but they did not make a lot of difference as it was not very crumbly.

The Speculoos, on the other hand, did not disappoint. Even though the cake base was the same as the original burnt cheesecake, it was slightly more moist. The lotus biscuit crumbs had more crisp than the oreo crumbs too. This just proves that you can’t go wrong with Speculoos. Yay!

The store assistant said that they infuse rose flavours into the cheesecake for this, explaining its pink appearance. The lychee flavours come from the lychee pops on top, which was the highlight of the cake! If you love having lychee pops in your drinks, you will enjoy it with the cake too! However, even with the cheesecake being infused, it was lacklustre and also faced the issue of being a little dry as compared to the Ondeh Ondeh flavour.

The last of the cakes, the Ondeh Ondeh flavour. Simply put, it was the best among the four flavours I got. Delish!! It was slightly different from the other cheesecake bases, other than the fact that it has pandan flavours infused into, it has a gooey centre! The gula melaka and coconut flakes on top were not as generous as the ones on the cakes on the display, but it was still very satisfying and this is one flavour that I highly recommend getting, along with the Speculoos mini burnt cheesecake.

As for the macarons, I got 6 different flavours — Earl Grey, Cheesecake, Oreo Cheesecake, Thai Milk Tea, Red Velvet and their best seller, Salted Caramel. There were a total of about 10 to 12 flavours to choose from which was a headache for me because I was quite indecisive.

The store assistant mentioned that their macarons are not super sweet, like those sold elsewhere. However, I beg to differ… as it was still quite sweet on the first bite. Out of the six that I tried, my top two favourites were the Thai milk tea and earl grey (the blue one that looks like Monster Inc’s Sullivan). The red velvet was way too sweet, but the cream cheese filling was great.

As for the cheesecake, oreo cheesecake, and salted caramel macaron, they were alright. There was nothing too special other than the fact that it was hard to distinguish between the three, if not for the different colouring.

All in all, I will still recommend trying their Ondeh Ondeh mini burnt cheesecake and it would be a nice cake for a midnight birthday surprise for a friend if they live in the area! I’ve been seeing lots of reviews about their pandan waffles too and I would definitely want to give it a try as it looks super good!!
