When I was in university, Far East Plaza was my regular haunt. You know the kind of place where you don’t even need to think—you just go straight to your usual makan spots. But times have changed, and so have I.

This time, I returned with a mission: to try somewhere new using SAFRA’s SG60 Food Galore $6 off voucher. And that’s how I discovered Ume Maru—a charming little spot I would have totally missed if not for this campaign.

A Little Escape: Ume Maru at Far East Plaza

Let me tell you about Ume Maru—a gem I never expected to find inside Far East Plaza. It’s opened by the folks behind Umesan 100, and the vibe is inspired by Jimbocho Book Town in Japan. That alone was enough to make me curious.

In the day, it’s a quiet coffee bar where one can pen their thoughts over a Sea Salt Caramel Iced Latte. Once the sun sets, the lights dim and the magic starts: the space transforms into a cosy umeshu bar with a great food and drink pairing menu.

It reminded me of those small, peaceful cafés I stumbled upon while walking around Tokyo. Nostalgic, calming, and totally unexpected in Orchard.

What I Ate

The Salmon Mentai Roll ($24) arrived first. Expect lightly seared thick slices of salmon slathered in creamy mentai sauce, resting atop perfectly seasoned sushi rice. It was decadent and rich.

Next came the Spicy Miso Dry Ramen ($22). If you like a kick, order this. The noodles were springy, tossed in a savoury miso sauce with heat that builds slowly. And the fresh pan-seared prawns at the centre made this super satisfying.

But it was the Katsu Mabushi ($20) that surprised me most. Think crispy katsu, fluffy rice, and a light dashi broth on the side. It’s meant to be eaten in stages—plain, with condiments, or with broth poured in. It was comforting — something you’d crave on a rainy day.

For drinks, I tried their Sea Salt Caramel Iced Latte ($6.50) and the playful Iced Umericano ($8)—a take on the classic Americano, reimagined with umeshu’s subtle fruitiness. Both were excellent. Don’t miss the Umeshu Tasting Set as well.
