Many have said that the east side is the best side as it has a plethora of food. Adding to that never-ending list of eateries to visit is the new Wan Mei Dessert 碗美 located in The Odeon Katong!

Opened in November by Mathew, his mother and sister, this family-run business serves traditional Chinese desserts.

Be greeted by soothing floral arrangements, emerald green walls, and wooden tables as you step into the store. Wan Mei 碗美 Desserts is a clever wordplay of 完美 (perfect in english) and 碗 (bowl in english) that Mathew came up with. He elaborated that, like the name, the stall aims for every bowl of dessert to be perfect!

The stall is currently serving their soft launch menu which consists of a variety of hot and cold desserts with Teochew and Taiwanese influences.WanMei-06

After battling the blistering heat to get here, I was all geared up for the Wan Mei Snow Ice Set ($8)! The set is customisable with a choice of snow ice flavour, one syrup, and three toppings — all of which are served separately.

With a variety of 24 toppings to select from, the stall also has unique offerings such as the noodle-like jelly named Lychee or Mango “hor fun”, Oreo crumble and Xiao Man Tou.

I went with one of their popular flavours, the Milo Dinosaur, with the classic syrup option of condensed milk, and toppings of Earl Grey Jelly, Rainbow Rice, and Red Bean.

Wan Mei’s version of Taiwanese snow ice was lightly shaved and smooth. I was surprised by the Earl Grey Jelly which carried rich tea notes in each cube. The red bean was said to be made in-house by Mathew’s mother and it had a creamy texture. Drizzles of condensed milk went in hand with the milo powder, and the rainbow rice added a good crunch and pop of colour to the dish, making it extra Insta-worthy!

Next, I tried the Yuzu Ice Dessert ($5) which comes with yuzu ice shavings, lychee hor fun, mango bursters, and Nata De Coco. The yuzu ice was zesty and went well with the refreshing and silky lychee hor fun which gave both a good crunch and smooth mouthfeel. I thought that the yuzu was a tad too sour, but those who love robust tangy flavours will totally enjoy this!

I ended my icy adventures with a hot dessert, Peach Gum ($5). Known as a beauty tonic as it’s rich in collagen, the dish provides small balls of peach gum that has been simmered with red dates, longans, snow fungus, wolfberries and more. The peach gum is topped off with snow pears, longan, and lychee. The peach gum was chewy, and the soup that came with it was smooth and nourishing.

Overall, Wan Mei is quite a 完美 pitstop after a shopping trip or dinner!
